I was bidding on a Colt SP1 A1-style upper with brass deflector and old-style triangular handguards, complete with the preban three-prong flash suppressor . I was really hoping to win, because the A1-style really does it for me

The auction eventually went to $320, at which point I passed on it (after all, I could order a brand new RR upper for 400 bucks).

What is the going rate for these uppers? Should I have gone higher?

CDNN has brand new Colt SP1 uppers for $400. You were not that far from the mark.

To a certain extent, it comes down to what you are willing to pay. As stated in a previous post, you can get a brand new one for ~$400.00.

I play the eBay game like you did. You bid what you are really willing to pay, and hope it comes out in your favor. I don't think I have ever run into anything that I wanted bad enough to up my max bid.

Um, I just got a brand-new (almost) pre-ban Colt A2 Carbine upper (sans bolt and charging handle) for $250 at a local shop.

An SP1 does not have a brass deflector, neither do they normally have a three prong flash suppressor. You were bidding on a parts assembly by who knows who? You were probably lucky to not get it. jmtc

I agree BigG. The SP1 has no brass deflector and no forward assist. It's really the first model of the AR15 and I've read that approximately 16,000 were made. It's also a 1/12 twist and chrome lined.

I purchased an SP1 back in February and paid $303, shipped. I found it at eBay, too. It was in pristine condition. I also had to purchase a bolt and paid $100 for it.

It shot 2 MOA right out of the box which really impressed me. I'm still not a big fan of the .223 caliber, but it is accurate.
