Well, I was in my local gunshop yesterday purchasing a new S&W 686. I had just finished the purchase when my FFL asked if there was anything else I was on the lookout for. I told him I was fine for the moment but he insisted that I wait for a minute while he went upstairs to get something. When he returned he was carrying two brown colt cardboard boxes. (He knows I have a soft spot for Colt revolvers). One was a NIB Colt Trooper, 6" barrel, with factory nickle finish. The other was a NIB Colt Lawman, 2" barrel, also in factory nickle finish. He said that he had just gotten both of the pistols fom an individual that day and hadn't had a chance to put them on the shelves yet. Both were 357's and each had a price tag of $400. I immediately put the Trooper on layaway and will pick it up next week.
I have been searching both gunbroker and gunsamerica to find out if I have made a wise pruchase, but cannot find a Trooper exactly like that one. Unlike most of the Troopers I have encountered, this one has very smooth factory Colt walnut grips with no checkering at all; only the Colt gold medallion at the top of the grips. Decided to post this to see if anyone has any information as to the round-about date of manufacture for this style of Trooper, (might be hard to find out without the serial #) or what the value might be. Let me know if it was a wise purchase. Thanks.

Old model or MK III's. I paid $450 for this 99%+ 4" Old Model Trooper at a gun show a year ago and am quite pleased with it.

The rest of my little Trooper family was bought many years ago, all where less than $200.

That was a good buy. I'd consider the other one too at that price since they are in the box. Some of the Custom shop guns had the smooth stocks. Did the box have a green label?

It is a Trooper MK III with serial # 463XX. If I remember correctly the box was just a plain brown colt box and the label was the standard gold color. Thanks.

A Trooper shouldn't have the gold medalions (those were reserved for Pythons). They should be silver even though there were times when stocks were just used up, but that generally didn't apply to custom stocks.
