I wanted to do a good deed for a friend of mine who helped me out with something recently. My buddy is just new to firearms and I've been helping him along with matters.

Anyway, I took him to a new sporting store in my area today (California) thinking I'd get him a HD shotgun or a pistol. I was shocked to see the variety and pricing of ARs. My buddy eventually opted for the S&W Sport AR15 at the price of $650! Brand spanking new. He asked me if the price was too high. I told him that I haven't seen such AR prices in a very long time. What's more is that he bought a load of PMC 5.56 (nice stuff made in S. Korea) at $9 for a box of 20.

The point is that I've been telling people that the firearms craze would slow down and that pricing would return to some normalcy. Now here's a bolder prediction: in the next two years you're going to see prices fall. They manufacturers will have a tougher time moving their products. They'll start pricing to move product........;)

I figure it is what it is, at least pending the 2014 mid-terms. The dims are all out for gun control and if they get both the House and Senate, you won't see many guns or ammo available for a long time. This whole panic buying situation was brought about by the current administration's political response to CT, not the event.

Gun owners need to remember the mantra they spewed when Obamacare was rammed through..."Yes We Can."

I have about resigned myself to picking up a little ammo when available and just accept the price.

Good thing he didn't pick anything chambered in .22 long rifle, the ammo selection I'm sure would dissapoint.

Not going to happen to the extent you are hoping for. You forget all of the new people coming into the shooting sports.

You are right to a point.

Gun prices, or more correctly, AR-15 prices have fallen since the sharp increases during the panic. Production finally caught up with demand and the used racks are flooded with guns that people bought and then realized they couldn't afford them. All the local stores that didn't have a single AR-15 4 months ago now have them stacked like cord wood. The $600-$850 AR's are back. The same is not true of mini 14's and a lot of AK's. The prices on those seem to have remained high.
Unfortunately, I do not think ammo will ever come back down to pre-panic levels, and why should it? It can not have gone unnoticed by the manufacturers, distributors and, store owners that despite higher prices, they can not stock the shelves fast enough. I recently read that that over 30% of gun sales in the last year were to first time buyers. That means that the number of gun owners has increased significantly and the demand for ammo has too. Nine dollars for 20 rounds of PMC, are you kidding? You think that is a good price? (Where is the smiley laughing his head off?) Before the panic you could buy that stuff for about $5/20 at Cabela's. Twenty round boxes of Winchester FMJ that used to sell for $6 a box at Wally World are now $12.99. Heck, right after the panic started all that was available at Wal-Mart was Winchester Black box JHP's for $10.99 and it sat on the shelves until people realized it was all they could get so they paid the price. That same stuff is over $20/20 and they can't get it. American Eagle 62 grain FMJ's are selling for $10.47 at WW. I haven't seen a hundred round box of federal there in over 2 months. Prices at Cabela's are even worse. The same with Dick's. A large local store, Kittery Trading post, is selling 100 round bags of who knows what 223 for as much as $80 per bag. Get used to it and buy more before the prices go even higher. Welcome to the new Normal.

Oh, just wait, gun control is coming up again, trust me. It's just around the corner just watch and see. In fact, word is something is a stirring right now. So, if you think the panic is subsiding it may be for now but it won't be long before its full force again but that is just my prediction. I hope I am wrong.

Silent Stalker is right

I don't know if it is possible that the Dems retake the house next year during Mid-term elections but, if it is a possibility, there is a very real chance that a lot of gun/ ammo control laws could become reality. Remember, Obama will sign any control legislation that gets to his desk and will push for it when it looks possible. 2016 looks even worse from where I sit. If Hillary is the Democratic candidate, and she probably will be, Every liberal that can walk will be going to the polls. Even if she were to lose, and at this time I can't see that happening, most of of the voters she brings out will vote a straight party ticket. If she is the next President and the Dems control both the Hoiuse and the Senate, you bet we will see a lot of gun control laws pass. Please tell me I am wrong.

That doesn't seem like a bold prediction.

That kinda seems like repeating the consensus opinion among 99% of us.

I'm planning to buy some more ammo for real (well, for real for me, like case quantities) in December-February. I figure that will have been long enough since the panic started + demand goes down when it gets cold outside + it's before typical US manufacturers first quarter scheduled price increases. So lon gas some other psychotic nutbag doesn't send everybody into an overactive tailspin between now and then it's all good.

For now I'm just picking up some of the great-priced magazines and parts and firearms since so many of those things have bottomed out already

I think it's bold....I'm being bold here. Not in a Navy SEAL sort of way, but in a hot, spicy chili sort of way.....jj;)

Actually, I hear a lot of opinions welcoming others to the "new normal". I think that market forces drive the firearms industry like any thing else. I'd agree that there is an emotional factor, which you don't have with a lot of other non-staples. But much can happen that will drive the market downward. Once people "feel" that they're well stocked/supplied, and if they don't feel a need to spend dwindling dollars on more of the same, you can expect prices to fall pretty drastically.

what good is gun prices falling with hardly any ammo and it is expensive? it is like saying the price of cars is falling because there is no gas. the antis know all they have to do is come out with radical gun control bills and the gun buying public will do the dirty work for them by hoarding ammo. it is like the antis are saying we give them enough rope and they will hang themselves

AR prices are definitely falling, and most ammo is close to pre-panic levels. Last fall (pre-panic) I would sell M&P Sports and DPMS Sporticals as fast as we could get them. Now they sit for weeks at the same prices, or lower in some cases. I think a lot of people who wanted to try out an AR, or had never really even considered it ran out and bought one for fear they might not be able to. New shooters coming on the scene are still buying, but for the most part the demand has been met, and then some. Prices will have to fall for the manufacturers to sell the same amount of product.

My observations disagree with this.

The overlooked alternative to overpriced factory ammunition is reloading.

And, yes Virginia, reloading supplies are available at affordable prices. The best tactic is surf the web and get on as many waiting and back order lists you can.

And, yes Virginia, I have purchased reloading components this year.

And, yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. You just have to look for him harder this year.

GOP don't do anything but argue among themselves so the Dems will take the house & Hillary will be the next pres. ...ammo is the way they will control us not guns...ask yourself where are all the .22s ? ...buy all the ammo you can get ...take care

Prices are subject to supply and demand. As long as elections go in our favor in 14 and 16 and there aren't any tragedies in the near future then we'll be ok for a while. But if the political climate is hostile to 2a issues or something happens then we'll continue to have problems.

Unfortunately, I think there will always be a political threat to us. This is why we have to continue to let our voices be heard and support those who support us.

Buy now! hell will break loose in January 2017 with Hillary in the White House and the Democrats with a majority in Congress and Senate. Al the anti gun crap they could not pass this year, they will pass in 2017. We basically have 3 years to prepare, make it count.

if they pass what they have always wanted you will have to prepare to give up your guns or fight

Those counting on Hillary being president are making a HUGE assumption. Obamacare is already driving Democrats away in droves. When it finally kicks in for real people are going to be screaming for mercy. The Republicans win this one in a landslide. People don't like that much radical change from either side.

BTW I've never seen PMC for $5 for a box of 20. It's always been about $8-$9 a box around my area or it has been for several years.

Where were the prices on AR's around the first quarter or beginning of the year???
Let's say on an M&P 15/Sport or a DD M4??
