What is a good price for JHP bullets? I am fairly new to reloading and to this point have only reloaded regular ball ammo. I want to now venture into hollow point ammo. What are the better brands and what is a good price? To this point I've shopped for the cheapest and frankly for target practice ammo the cheaper doesn't matter but now with HP I want to find good components for the best price. The powder I've decided to go with Hodgdon HP38. 45ACP and 9mm are the calibers I will be doing Thanks

XTP's are good, and I can recommend RMR, as I have shot their bullets, and they work very well. I can't speak to the others, s I have not dealt with them.

XTP, FTX, are Hornady and Good bullets, I have used a ton of them, you might look at Midwayusa.com as they are usually fair on their prices too.

Good Luck
Dan

For the "name Brand" I agree with Hornady XTP. Walkalong gave a good list of the other makers.

That said to what end are JHP in handguns needed for general shooting??
Yes, they may be a tad more accurate than Ball ammo but not as much as in a rifle. If you want to duplicate or make self defense ammo then that's different.
JMHO but for range/target shooting unless you are really, really good, they are not worth the extra money.

At 10 or 25 yards, even I can hit the target with ball ammo.:):)

I shoot Zeros in both FMJs and JHPs. I think they perform great at a great price.

Check out rmrbullets.com Most of their JHP bullets are more for accuracy than for defensive purposes but they do tend to have some defensive projectIles as well.

That is what I want them for. My bad for not stating that.. I'll be shooting and testing them in the pistols I will be using them in. I have two 9mm's that I will be test firing them in. That being said I keep hearing that reloads do not work right in Glocks. Any truth to that because I have asked someone who owns many Glocks and they never had a problem. I have seen videos saying it's not good and i know that most if not all gun manufactures don't recommend reloads but, that is just to prevent lawsuits. I do not see or have ever heard of any other issues with other guns and reloads just Glocks. I did see a video about the polygonal rifling being the issue so, anyone with any experiences with Glocks and reloads. thanks

There have been billions of reloads sent downrange with Glocks as there are billions of Glocks out there. Yes, ALL manufactures. say no reloads, why should they cover damage from some other guys mistakes.?

HK has poly rifling also.

Just stick to coated, plated or FMJ and all is well with the stock Glock barrel. Folks even shoot lead in them but that's another debate left alone.:)

In addition to liking the Zeros because they shoot well, the 115gr JHPs are actually a little cheaper than the 124gr FMJs. I started out shooting the 124gr FMJ and I like them. Then I found their 115gr JHP and I like that a lot.

I, too, can't discern the difference between an FMJ and JHP from an accuracy perspective, given my (lack of) skill with a pistol. But hitting a metal can with a JHP is a lot more fun than with an FMJ. :)

Curious to know if njsportsman lives or travels in nj.

Unfortunately yes, I do live in the Peoples Republic of NJ and I know where your going HP's are legal in NJ. Nobody knows the law but, if you go to the NJ State Police web page they are legal in your house and in transit to a shooting range. When you have a illegal weapon and you have HP's then the HP's become illegal. After Phil Murphy gets in office I will be moving back to PA as soon as I can. I want to move back anyway but if Phil gets in I will be trying to get back sooner. PA concerns me though anymore because a few Demorats have been getting in aka Wolfie boy, Kathleen Kane. Katie Mcginty did not lose by much.

"...just have to shop around..." That applies to any bullet. What you think is cheap, isn't necessarily so for other shooters either. Mind you, shooting jacketed bullets all the time gets expensive in a hurry. Especially for informal target shooting. And buying bullets on-line will be expensive anyway with the shipping costs added. Said shipping costs are not set by the seller either. Only the carrier sets that, based on weight, the size of the package and distance. Plus any Hazmat fees if there are any.

I can't tell from your response if you were confirming you are wanting to make target or defensive ammunition.

Most of the big-name makers sell defensive hollowpoints, but unfortunately the pricing ends up pretty fierce. If I want a name-brand HP I just buy loaded Gold Dot ammunition in the SpeerLE 50 round boxes. I think I paid about 46 cents/round for 115gr. 9mm. It's advantageous from a legal perspective in most defensive shootings to have factory ammo, even if your handloads push the same bullet to the same velocity, and if I'm going to use it for defense I like that idea anyway.

If you want target style hollowpoints or cost-effective defensive types, many manufacturers can set you up. The 'MPR' 9mm 124gr. from RMR is both a defensive and target-grade projectile, and costs less than jacketed 9mm alternatives I know of:

Give hornady XTP a try. If you like that bullet, you can buy the same weight HAP bullets in bulk for general shooting.

^^^I have experience with 9mm jhp in combination with HP-38 and agree with this.

^^ being legal in NJ is nice and all but still can be the cause of much headache so it's really up to you to determine if the benefits out weigh the potential heartache. I would say check the latest edition on Evan Nappen's book if you haven't already.

I spent the first 45 years if my life in NJ. Moved to PA in 2004, I can say this was one of the best things I have done for myself and family. PA is of course one of the most gun friendly states there is. It is always a worry when the libs get elected but the gun culture in this state is so well ingrained that it would take many libs in many offices to change things. Of course never take things for granted but at least in NE PA the biggest concern is rising property taxes. I'm in Carbon County btw on the edge of the Poconos. I can shoot my firearms in my yard, I have 4 acres set in the woods. But I don't do that very often instead I belong to several clubs keeps me in tune with what others are doing and the neighbors are happier.

Ditto

XTPs were the first bullets I reloaded as a friend gave me some powder and a box of them. It was a great gift and a nice way to start reloading.

I’ve since used Berry’s and RMR.

For value RMR is hard to beat. For name brand you get what you pay for XTPs are safe.

I also used HP38/Win 231 until I tried the RMR 124 gr BE86 combo. I highly suggest you try this.

Since you asked about prices. I’d say you’d be hard pressed to get a better price than RMR with the THR discount if you buy 1000 or more at a time. That said, if you’re just starting buy 100 and see how you like them. I started with the powder and bullets that my friend gave me then bought a lb locally and lots of 100 bullets until I found a combo I liked.

RMR and Everglades both have free shipping so while 100 at a time isn’t a great value they’re not horribly priced while you try different bullets.

I’m currently working up to getting 5 and 8 lb containers of powders which I try to get at gun shows or when there are online no hazmat shipping. And again 1000 bullets at a time from RMR are a great value.

Agree except I prefer 124/125s instead of 115s for SD.
Target Sports USA has good prices on the Speer Gold Dot LE ammo. You do need to pay shipping but the LE50 round boxes usually sell for what local dealers want for the 20 round boxes.
Same stuff, actually I have heard Speer holds tighter tolerances on the LE stuff, but don't know it for a fact.

No hazmat on bullets that I have ever heard of. Powder and primers yes, bullets no.
RMR has "free" shipping, included in thier price. Great product, good people to do business with.
5% discount for THR members on all their bullets with the code posted in BDSs PIF thread here on THR.
10% off the 9mm MPR JHPs only with a special code. That code is by PM only and Jake the owner requested it not be posted.
Please PM me if you would like it.

The MPR JHPs have shot well for me in 9mm from medium to full power loads.

$99/1000 -10% =$90/1000 shipped.

Big retailers get far better pricing on shipping than private citizens do.

Then they often jack up the shipping costs charged to their customers to increase their profits.

Do they charge Haz-Mat fees on inert projectiles in Canada?

The best prices I've found on hollowpoints are the ones I make myself.
These were cast with my MP 452-200 grain hollowpoint 4 cavity mold. The interchangeable pins that came with the mold allow me to cast regular hollowpoints, "Penta Point" 5 sided hollowpoints or flat nosed solids.
MP Mihec .453 HP's and Penta HP's.jpg
For casting the regular hollowpoints I use pure lead plus @ 2% tin. They expand and penetrate about as well as 230 grain +P Gold Dots when fired into water jugs.

I believe the penta point option is intended (like the recently introduced Lyman "Devastater" molds) to expand and fragment when cast out of relatively hard clip-on wheelweight lead.

The solid flat point design is for use when maximum penetration is desired.

Mihec MP 200 gr cast HP workup.jpg
When powder coated, cast pistol bullets can be pushed at least as fast as expensive jacketed slugs while providing equal accuracy, range and terminal effects.

In my experience properly coated cast bullets WILL NOT harm polygonal rifling or cause lead build up in suppressors.

Plus they're a helluva lot cheaper!

So what's not to like?

MP molds currently has a sale going on. You can get a superb quality, four cavity brass hollowpoint mold for $117.82 and that price includes all three pin sets PLUS free shipping from Slovenia!
