Just priced out powder, primers and bullets......

Like the others have said, you can find cheaper prices. I use Midway, Midsouth, Powder Valley, American Reloading, Rocky Moutain Reloading (RMR), Blue Collar Reloading. There are many other reputable places. It pays to shop around.
American Reloading is how I load 9mm for 14cpr. 5.5 cent pulled or tarnished bullets shipping included. I just scored 4k Federal FMJ bullets. They are tarnished, but shoot great. Whether pulled, tarnished or blems., they are great training bullets.

Wasn't there a thread a week or so ago regarding problems with American Reloading? Not trying to start rumors, but I thought I read it here.

edit: not really their fault https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/american-reloading-pull-downs-75-77gr-smk.926773/

I'd never heard of Blue Collar Reloading. I went to their site and checked them out. Their prices are very competitive and the selections are good. Thanks for the tip.

Not sure, I've ordered about 15 times over the last 2 years, only one issue, I weighed the bullets, like 1lb short. They refunded me the amount next day. Super nice people. My 15 orders amount to about 30k bullets loaded and shot, no issues. The issue you saw may have been that they don't answer messages. They put up a new website last year, and they can't get the Contact Us link on thier site to work. You need to email the address posted, they answer next day usually.

This may have been the one I was thinking of...the problem appears to have been mixed signals or similar, not American per se

Yeah I never buy mixed lots of anything. Ogive differences dictate that you need to seperate for consistency, I'm not putting in that much time when it's such a good deal anyway. I just wait for exactly what I want to become available, then order alot of it.

Has Accurate 5744 been discontinued, or is it just hard to come by?

Given the prices quoted by vendors when it was last available ($72-ish/pound), it wouldn't surprise me to see it dropped owing to low sales as consumers balk....

I picked up a lb of it a few weeks ago for some mild 45-70 loads.

5744 has always been gold plated as far as I can tell. It's almost always > $60/lb. It's definitely the go-to for black powder sim loads in older cartridges.

Loading “blasting” grade ammo to save money isn’t efficient.
However, I don’t go that direction.
Compare cost of Hornady Amax, Vmax, or Federal Gold Medal Match, and reloading can save up to 75% off factory loaded ammo.

For blasting or plinking, I use cast bullets, from scrounged sources of lead, and bulk purchases of components. I NEVER buy less than 5,000primers and then never at retail, but shop for free shipping and hazmat.

I can load pennies on the dollar as I predominantly use range pickup brass, and range scrap lead… I’ve shot National Records in NRA PPC using cast bullets in 9mm and .38. Bullets cost practically nothing. Just a bit of time, which I have more of than $$$$…
Buying Hornady XTP bullets per 100/box even at retail doesn’t compare to bulk milspec 9mm factory loaded surplus/over run’s…
1-hole 12shot groups at 25yds from a Match pistol, match ammo; vs. 3-4”groups with blasting grade ammo is the difference!
Last I checked, Federal HST boxed for Police/LE sales (50/box, 1,000case) was running $1.20/round.
BIG savings reloading!

Shooters World “Buffalo Rifle” is said to be the exact same thing as 5744 (Lovex D060.01).
In 8lb canister it’s $318.95, plus $12.95 shipping, and $23.95 hazmat.
But currently out of stock.

I haven’t ever seen it available, but a steady supply of Buffalo Rifle would probably replace H335 as my 30-30 cast powder. Even before the price increase, whoever was buying AA 5744 must have been doing something way more important that I would with it.
