Primer Availability & Prices

Regular deli coffee, burnt and three hours old. You would have thought that they air freighted it from Colombia that morning and it was delivered by El Exigente.
The LGS closest to me keeps coffee in the lobby. It’s not very good but it’s free. I wish they had primers but free coffee is an okay compromise. I guess.

There was not a shortage of primers in the 70s/80s that in any way resembles what has become increasingly endemic since the 90's.
Nor was everyone a pepper in the 70s/80s, in fact few people were. I'm not even going to bother with the rest of the off topic rambling.
So no, inflation has not been a factor in previous primer shortages. And stagflation would not be a factor even if it was occurring as it does not refer to a price phenomenon..
You remember the 70’s?
I guess Carlos Santana was right, “The people who don’t know history were probably listening to my albums instead of studying in school.”

I remember an interview with Grace Slick about her time in the band (Jefferson Starship/Airplane/Whatever) in the 1970s.

She said she didn't remember anything about the 70s. At all. Nothing.

I was not surprised.

Went to the local Eggs Up grill yesterday, 2.65 for a cupa joe, $32.00 for b'fast for two and they have the stones to suggest a tip that includes the tax in the tip. They can KMA.
I get my primers at the local gun show here. it's the only place where i can get them. $80.00 a brick It boils down to how many do you want or how many do you need. I buy what i need.

I like the coffee at our local casino, it's good & smooth and I can get it with whatever favored creamer I want but my last cup cost me $247 before I could get out of there. LOL
My gun club is going to raffle off a brick of primers. They say they can get more money in return from primers than they can if they raffled off a firearm. I guess more people need primers that need another firearm. LOL

What i remember from the 70's. I got my 1st firearm in sept of 77. Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter. And we had off for 3 days of school. Because of the bitter cold and oil crises.
I remember the truckers striking and grocery stores not getting shipments of packaged goods. I lived in a farming area and we ate local food only so it didn’t affect our family too badly. I also remember working as a gas monkey, having people screaming at me about the price of gas - like I did any more than pump gas and clean windshields. Shortages do strange things to some folks.

Sworn in with FBI July 9, 1972, was anxiously awaiting word on law school. Worked in main Justice building while Hoover bldg was constructed across street. FBI lab & firearms collection was upstairs in Justice.
That football season redskins made it to super bowl in Pasadena vs. undefeated Dolphins. DC was crazy over skins and the jersey number and name of the players were painted in white paint on the girders of the Hoover bldg’s skeleton. Cool sight to see. Concrete trucks were painted burgundy & gold with the tumbler as a football. A couple were driven across country to Rose Bowl parking lot to sit while skins got a whooping. That’s what I remember.

Federal / Federal Match SPM's have been available for a while here, I believe it was 8 or 9/tray for the Feds and 10 a tray for the Fed Match's. (Academy)
I've reached my comfort zone in the levels of my own stash and haven't been buying anymore as of late.

LRP's are pretty scarce. Some Rem 9 1/2's are available at Gun Shows for $125 brick. While I wouldn't mind having some, I don't need them that bad.

ah for the good old days, 1K of Wolf LPP for $20.
I got two bricks for $38 Tula LR in mid-2020 from a nearby pawn shop. I thought it was kinda pricey but since it looked like things were going to get worse, not better, I poneyd up. Glad I did. They’re really good primers. Same year that Christmas my father in law gave me the last brick of CCI No.34 at the gun club he shoots at. I thought it was about the best Christmas present he ever gave me. :)

An observation I made reading through this thread....The last primers I bought at "the old days prices" were 2K LRP from Academy. I was kinda shocked they were even on the shelf - out in the open. I remember picking one sleeve up and carrying it over the the guy behind the gun counter and asking him about the price (3.99) and how many I could buy. I'm sorry/not sorry guys - I bought all of them for the 30-30. After that I snagged two bricks of CCI #34 for my 7.62x39 and I was good.

My theory is....the LRP were the last to go out of stock, and they will be the last to come back (in quantity). You can't even find #34 right now (except on the scam sites o_O)

When the cost of reloading plinking ammo approaches the cost of bulk factory ammo, I'll find a different hobby.

Reloading is very relaxing to me. When i lock myself in my man cave. And crank the tunes up. And load away is great me time.
It was a beautiful day today so I parked myself on the stool, laptop on the cast iron picnic table, headset on, cranking away resizing brass waiting for the next meeting to start. I was just inside WiFi range listening to Artie Shaw and thinking about which bullet to use in these .35Whelens.
I don’t have a man cave. Guess that means I’m not a cave man?

The first brick of LPP I ever bought were CCI-300s which I paid $14.10 for before tax (which was only about 5%). My most recent purchase was 2 bricks of Fed 150s which, with a no hazmat special, were $197 and change, shipped. But, at least I'm still shootin'.

Stopped in the LGS in Cobleskill this afternoon. I was in town to meet someone for work and had never been to that store so I checked it out to see what components they have. All he had was one pound of H110 and I'm set in that department. Asked about primers and he said he had none but heard someone is building a plant in Georgia. If all these rumors are true there will be a primer factory in every state by 2030.

Going to swing by Frank's in Amsterdam on my way by tomorrow, then maybe Frank's in Canastota. Not holding my breath, though.

Inflation and stagflation were major factors in the late’70’s/early’80’s shortages. There were a whole lot fewer handloaders back then and more people kept years/decades of supplies on-hand for the atomic holocaust. Underground bunkers, dried food stores, water tanks and diesel hoarders… everyone was a “prep’r” back then. That made it less of a panic. And, the news had more important things to talk about back then than ammunition prices, too. Gas lines, race riots, environmental disasters, the “scourge of the Vietnam veteran”… drug wars were not a thing yet, as far as Walter Cronkite was concerned. That was later. Anyway, yes there have been other reloading supplies shortages where inflation was a factor. They were just a little before The Internet became people’s sole source of information.

Fortunately, I missed that one although I was loading shotgun then. I must have had plenty of supply, or my early onset Alzheimer’s won’t let me remember.

I’m guessing that is referred to the Carter Shortage?

I only remember the Clinton Shortage, the Obama Shortage and the Biden Shortage.

I’m a slow and simple guy. But after a lifetime, I think I have this figured out.

If the “wrong” party wins the Presidency, buy, buy, BUY!!!
