So I've ventured into reloading with a Lee Auto Turret press. I just primed a round, dropped the powder, seated the bullet, hit the taper and went to pull the round out and it was stuck in the shell holder. I removed the shell holder and the primer is partially seated but almost perfectly sideways.

So it's a loaded round with a sideways primer that is stuck in the shell holder.

Any ideas? Ive contemplated trying to dislodge the primer with a nail or something but I'm kinda partial to my hands and such so I figured I'd ask you guys. I guess worst case I can just order a new shell holder but I'd like to avoid that if possible.

Put it back in the press and use some pliers to pull it (the bullet) out. Remove one die/have a clear hole, clamp on with pliers and lower the ram. Deprime and try again.

Got a collet style bullet puller? If so, pull dump & deprime. If not, what kind of round? I think you really want to remove bullet & powder before addressing the primer removal.

Nick

Edit: I was too slow!

Hopefully the round is long enough so the bullet will stick out past a die hole.
Some guys might be tempted to smash that primer in further to get it out and then discard said round but I'd really not recommend that. and don't poke at it with a nail or something

You need to get it out of the shell holder to use an inertia puller and he obviously doesn't have a collet puller.
No you dont... I just used an inertia puller with the shellholder to pull a 38 an hour ago.

Once you get more used to the press, its pretty darn easy to feel when things arent right while priming. wether it be a sideways guy or one thats not gonna seat all the way without kicking and screaming.

Get a centrifugal force hammer puller, take the shell holder for the hammer out. Put you she'll and holder in place, screw the retaining cap on and whack it on the hard surface. Bullet and powder will come out. Put shell in press and de-cap. Your done.

With the primer stuck in the shellholder. If you can't pull the bullet in the press with pliers, and you have a kinetic puller you can use the puller. Most pullers will accept the standard holder, put the holder in replacing the collet. Then place a spacer made of cardboard (or something) in the gap of the shellholder so the case remains in place, preventing the primer from striking the shellholder. Then play whack-a-mole with the puller, watching the primer so it doesn't hit the holder. Then you can punch out the primer. The primer isn't that big of a worry, it takes a blow that pushes into its anvil in the base.

Use some diagonal wire cutters to cut the round nearly in half and throw it away.

My RCBS hand primer will occasional flip the small primers and I have to crush them into the primer pocket to get the brass out.

No powder or bullet yet, so I just tap the primer out and re-prime. None have gone off yet...... yet.

Yer not supposed to do that.

Problem is due to the gap in the shellholder (where the base slides in.). This can result in the primer moving out of the hole in the holder where it can be detonated by contact on impact. So you use something for a filler so the cartridge doesn't move.

That would be a kinetic puller.

Walkalong, what hand primer, universal shell holder or the older style? I just bought the former and I will have to keep a lookout for that.

RCBS. It did not used to do it. I think the plastic pieces need replacing. I just have to be more careful with small primers. If I shake it too much they can flip. It isn't a big problem as long as I am smooth with it. The primers in the picture was from priming 500 "processed" LC brass, where the biggest problem was a tight primer pocket entrance, not the hand primer.

RCBS has two versions. One has shell holders and the other has the universal shell holder. I was wonder which one you were using. I love the one I just bought.

I've done it a few times with 9mm in a Lee turret presss, but I "felt" it happen and checked before dropping powder. I just seated it again until it would clear the case holder. They didn't pop. Feds are softer brass though.

I've done this multiple times with Lee's "improved" (cough, cough, BS) hand priming tool. In each case, I grab a small pair of needle-nose pliers or a pointed needle file and pull or pry it out.

I have it happen with the older Lee hand primer as well. Always with the small primers just like Walkalong. FWIW now I look at the primer before putting each shell in and can see if it is in wrong so I can correct it before I crush it or install it upside down. Solved the problem completely as far as I am concerned.:)
