Hello, I have a friend fairly new to long guns, (his gross experience revolves around a bersa .380 he grew up shooting with his dad) he has come to range days with me and he and his family really enjoyed it. They finally decided to get an ar15 in .223 wylde. I'm trying to help him find an optic to suit his purposes. He liked my romeo7 but his wife's astigmatism (like my wife's) didn't find it as nice as he did. Since the last time we shot together, I have acquired a 2x mp from bushnell (discontinued) that has a red/green t reticle that went straight to the wife's ar with great approval. We've agreed that for his purposes, a circle dot, triangle dot (romeo5 predator), horseshoe dot, chevron, t type, or even maybe a crosshair reticle would be great. The most ideal setup would involve a shake awake feature but that may not be a make or break feature. Non red sights would be most ideal for the astigmatism. The primary arms 3x32 compact gen III might be a little busy I'm thinking. Based on recent discussions, I think his budget will be $300 or less. What options are out there?
P.s. I just thought of something, at a local gun show there was a dealer for osprey(?) Optics, what do we know about them?

Eta curious about magnification as well, my optics designated for indoor use (not saying they don't go out to the ranch) are 1 and 2x is 3x too much? My 3-9x40 seems to really be limited at indoor ranges around the 30' mark, precise yes, but harder to "drive" if you will?

My solution for an indoor usable optic was the Crimson Trace Red/Green dot; The green dot works better with my astigmatism, but more importantly, the barrel of body is small enough, if you forget/can't turn it on in a hurry, it works like a big aperture sight. A big ghost ring, if you will. Unless you live in a mansion, or plan other outside uses for it, I recommend sticking with no magnification.

They sell tons of these; if they are out when you look, keep checking.

My astigmatism makes dots on rifles completely unusable; something like 12-15 smeared dots. With eyeglasses on, I can use a dot on a pistol fairly well.

For rifles, I've had good luck with LPVO scopes with illuminated reticles and Primary Arms' prism scopes; their 2.5X is economical, and completely usable without battery power.

If a person wanted magnification, a tip-out magnifier is often a good option. If being the price of the RDS again, sadly.
Tipping a magnifier in is often easier than having to twist in a variable scope up from 1x.
But, your mileage may vary.

Ive got a Bushnell Lil P on my AR. I bought it specifically because its small and has diopter adjustment to help with my astigmatism. The fact that the reticle is black unless illuminated helps also.
It takes some practice to get used to it, as the lenses are tiny, and its slow unless your comfortable shooting with both eyes open....left eye provides most of the sight picture, right just gives you poa.....but its finally a 0+/- power optic im happy with.

Ill probably try a larger Prism at some point also, as im finding I like this one so much.

I might have to look into that. I need one for my AR, now that SWMBO has declared my first one (the one with the CT on it; I just have BUIS on the new one for now) her home defense gun. Of course, they are out.

I wouldn't disagree, the 2x(have) and 3x(looking at) are fixed power.

I like the Swampfox Blade 1X prism sight. It has a bullet rise reticle that works well. You sight it in at 50 yards and it has marks on the reticle for 5, 10 and 15 yard holds.
