LOS ANGELES — The head of the Police Department's counterterrorism bureau was detained by federal authorities Thursday after trying to board a flight at Los Angeles International Airport (search) with a loaded handgun in his carryon luggage.

John Miller (search), an ABC-TV reporter before he was hired for the security job, was off duty and heading to New York with his family when Transportation Security Administration officials discovered the .38-caliber handgun in his bag, TSA spokesman Nico Melendez said.

Miller is authorized to carry the weapon, but failed to disclose he was traveling with the gun.

Police Chief William Bratton said he spoke with Miller, who was "extraordinarily embarrassed" by the incident.

"It's a human mistake that was made," Bratton said. "John is certainly wishing it didn't happen.

Miller was briefly detained before he and his family were permitted to board their scheduled flight. The gun was confiscated.

"He knows the airport procedures. ... He didn't realize he had it," said Lt. Horace Frank, an aide to Miller. "It was an oversight."

Miller was on his way to New York to tape a farewell message to ABC's Barbara Walters (search), who is retiring. Before joining the LAPD, Miller co-anchored the network's "20/20" news magazine with Walters.

Bratton, who hired Miller as his spokesman when he was New York City police commissioner, then recruited him to come to Los Angeles, ordered an administrative investigation. He said he had no doubt that Miller made a simple mistake.

Under federal rules, Miller could be fined up to $3,000.

The truly revolting part of this is that the LAPD thinks someone is qualified to lead their counterterror bureau because they were an ABC reporter. Don't even know where to begin with that.

Just Godawful stupid. And this moron had a CCW permit.

See, this is part of the issue with making CCW an "elite thing". The idiots think they're above the law. And they sorta are, if it's the sort of thing their own sheriff/chief can cover up.

Not this time .

What this article omitted was that he was not allowed to fly that same day with his family, but was actually arrested and is facing charges.

Just read about it....

This is absurd.

Not even addressing the silliness of an ex-reporter as a counter-terrorism leader; he is a member of LAPD. Armed or not, he does not represent a threat to the airliner or passengers.

Of course, neither do I.

I am not an LAPD fan. I find them in general to be overly badge-heavy and under competent. (I suppose there are exceptions, shooting buddies I have.) However, I really don't think any of them are likely to be a terrorist.

Then steps in the Federal laws regarding transportation of firearms on aircraft. Minetka, et all. This is an example of obnoxious meeting incompetent.

I will be interested in how it all turns out.

The LAPD chief is holding news conferences making excuses for this guy. He is the biggest gun control whore in the world. So, I start wondering why? It dawns on me that it is because they issued him the permit! They are covering their own tail.

California is corrupt. Bratten is corrupt. The guy is an idiot. What good is his gun going to do him in his computer bag? He needs to read some "off body" threads on THR.

Folks, the article referred to him as "off duty" and "authorized" to carry the weapon. There was no mention of a CCW permit. I interpreted it to mean that he is considered a sworn officer and thus subject to the new national carry law for LEOs -- which, of course, does not authorize LEOs to carry on board scheduled aircraft. It would, however, allow him to carry legally in NYC.

"He knows the airport procedures. ... He didn't realize he had it," said Lt. Horace Frank, an aide to Miller. "It was an oversight."

Let's give him a break. I'm sure there are many times you've had a gun or two with you and didn't know it. Guns are great practical jokers, they like to sneak around and climb into pockets and luggage when we aren't looking - so they can embarrass us when they're found. I'm sure that's what happened in this instance. This fellow, being a former TV reporter  probably didn't have much experience with firearms and couldn't have known about their sneaky nature.

Wrong. He is a civilian. He is getting off because he is liked and connected to the corrupt Bratten.

Give him a break? Would they give us a break who they illegally repress from execising our 2nd ammendment rights?

I think the issue is not that he is a doofus who forgot he had a gun, but how he rose to a position of power and authority in the LAPD when his only qualification is he was a television reporter and a friend of the Chief from NYC? This is what needs to be examined.

Here is an excerpt from an interview John Miller interview with John Miller:

Q: Some have questioned whether a television correspondent is qualified for this job.

A: Nobody would have said a word if they picked a respected captain from narcotics. Would he have known anything about terrorism? Maybe not. Would he understand the cultures involved or the religions involved? Probably not Would he have traveled to the countries that have experienced this before? Probably not Would he have met Osama bin Laden personally and examined his mindset for a number of years? Highly doubtful. Now you take a person from police management background in the NYPD working with the commissioner there who then spent the bulk of the next eight years going from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan to Lebanon to Afghanistan to Athens to London working on stories about terrorism and terrorists. That would probably sound like the kind of person you might want to cast in a job like this. The difference is once you say this person is coming from television news, that sets off a lot of alarm bells.

Seems he was Bratton's chief spokeshole back in New York.

So this guy has a CCW permit. Now, he probably does need the permit since he is the head of LA's counterterrorism unit.

Still, the whole thing smacks of cronyism to me. :barf:

What does CT mean to the LAPD? When was the last terrorist attack or attempted attack on LA? Wasn't it the attempted bombing of LAX at the beginning of 2000?

Sounds like a intelligence job.

What this article omitted was that he was not allowed to fly that same day with his family, but was actually arrested and is facing charges.

Not true. He made his scheduled flight. He'll be issued a "letter of warning" by the TSA, and Bratton has said this won't be an issue for his job. In the absolute worst case, I hear he might get a fine of up to $3000.

If I had a CCW, forgot I had a gun in my carry-on bag, I'd be arrested and almost certainly charged with a felony. I would lose my RKBA forever. While in jail, I would lose my job. But hey... I'm not an LAPD crony, a US Congressman, or the coach of a big football team <spit>.

This type of incident is a huge indicator of why our CCW system needs to be fixed. This Miller guy doesn't "need" a CCW any more than anyone else does. But he gets one because he's a buddy of the chief.

It's time for the wall to come crumblin' down.

John Miller is an ok guy. He was Deputy Commissioner of Public Information for the NYPD under Bratton. He's also had at least one book on terrorism published. King Rudee hates him which makes him double ok with me.

That being said, he was stoopid and those of you who think you'd be buried underneath the jail for the same thing, you're probably right.:barf:

same thing happened to the ex-Detroit Chief of Police ...

... and that's why he is the EX-COP ... he tried to board a flight (I believe to Philadelphia) with his mousegun (IIRC, a .25 or .32). He resigned shortly thereafter (this and too many other embarrassing episodes for DPD on his watch just added up). Think this was last year, his name was Jerry Oliver.

As stupid as it is that everyone can't carry when and where they want. Rules are rules and we as Police should not be exempt.

Lets not bash the person though. His background is excellent and he is very qualifed for his position with LAPD.

Also please remember while cop-bashing with a smile, that Police are not the only people that use their position to get out of things. Doctors, lawyers, CEO'S, Firefighters, and anyone else who may know or have met someone once will use everything in thier power to get out of trouble.

True I don't know the man or even of him, but I find it interesting that he chose the term might want to cast in as compared to something like is qualified for.

At any rate, the double standard is incredible.

They should put the RAT SOB in jail like any other peasant who is not allowed to defend themselves in the PRK. Bratton is a toad and he should go to jail for being stupid and even stupider looking.
