I bought a Volquartsen Auto Bolt Release on the expectation that it would release the bolt by just pulling back on it after locking it back. I removed the old one, placed the new one in its place, put everything else back in its proper place, locked back the bolt, pulled back on the bolt, and.... nothing. It seems to work just the same as the old one. Is there another piece I need to put in or remove, or is this how it works?

Did you put the bolt lock spring back in place? Unless it's in place, the lock won't "snap" down out of engagement.

I installed the new part and put everything back the way it was before (the spring is in the littel notch) and it still does not shoot well.

Have you taken the new part out and compared it with the old part? If this is what I'm thinking of, the only difference between them should be that one of the slots is a little elongated, so it'll slip around a corner when you pull the bolt handle back and release it. I've got one of these in both of my 10/22s, and they work fine.

put one in my 22 yesterday, and i had problems with it too....

i could tell it was tight against the action wall so i just bent it over until it moved freely and problem solved....

Why buy the part when you can modify Ruger's? It's a simple matter of grinding off that wave-shaped lug as shown below.
