Problem with my Hornady LNL AP

Like everyone else, I have had to make some minor adjustments when I first got my LnL. It has been running almost flawlessly for the last two years. When I do have a problem, it is usually something I did wrong.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys. I bit the bullet and tampered with the pawls all it took was a slight adjusment of the left pawl and it works absolutely fine....well the shell plate does anyway. I do have occasions when the priming system will just decide not to pick up a primer or will get locked in the rearward position. But i'm working on it.
Thanks again.

Loosen the top of the primer cam rod screw and move it away from the press so the slider will move farther back. This should fix your primer problem.

A few additional things to look at regarding the primer feed:

  • Make sure you insert the white plastic rod into the top of the feed tube after you've loaded primers into it. This provides a little extra weight to keep the primers moving through the tube. You may want to attach an extra weight to the end of the rod to help things along.
  • Check for crud, burrs or roughness that might prevent the primer shuttle from moving freely. A bit of polishing might be in order, or at least some graphite. Don't use a wet lube.

These steps should also improve the primer slide's reliability . . . they're just a little more detail on how to adjust the cam wire:

  1. Empty the primer feed tube by unscrewing the retaining hex screw on the base while holding the base firmly in place.
  2. Carefully rotating the base clockwise, horizontally, until the primers slide out (you'll probably want to catch them with something; your other hand works fine for this :)).
  3. Remove the black plastic retainer and the inner feed tube, then unscrew the outer tube from the base.
  4. Screw just the base back into place.
  5. Use the base's hole over the slide as a guide to adjust the cam wire so that the primer collector hole is offset just a tiny bit rearward from center. Do this when the ram is at the top of its travel (handle down).
  6. Reassemble, and your should be good to go.

I did some work on my press yesterday, re-adjusted everything and one thing I did was to chamfer the primer hole a little with my dremmel, the slider hasn't hung up yet after 100 rounds, so maybe, just maybe I am on the road to getting this press to run.
The first primer slider I got with the press had a bad casting (not filled out around the primer hole) and also the primer seater was bad, the threads were it screws into the press were overlapping the seater stem so I had to dremmel that down, all in all over time it has been things of this nature that have left me frustrated, and it takes time to figure out what the problems are.

See what happens in the future, thanks for everyones help and tips.

Very happy to hear this myself, Floydster. I really do hate to write anyone off as a grumpy old fart :D
