I have one of these kinetic pullers and can't seem to make it work. I have read the instructions and have had zero success with pulling bullets on .223 and .30-06 rounds. Helpful tips please.
Actually, a smart sharp blow against a solid wood surface works for me. It may take a few whacks to dislodge a heavy crimp (surplus GI type) but eventually it'll pull loose. These type of pullers DO break and I've gone through a few of them. Don't whack against a cement floor! Use a corner 4X4 post on your bench- and if there's none there, add one! A tree stump works too! Inertia pullers are for "unrolling" home-rolled ammo and NOT GI stuff- that's pretty much sealed with lacquer and crimps!
Invest in a good/decent collet puller and you'll NEVER have problems again. If I have to pull one or two rounds, I'll use the inertia puller- anything more than that and out comes the collet type.
I bought mine at a gun show used for $7!! One of the best investment I ever made!!
If they are true military surplus or mil-spec imitation surplus, they have a sealant in the case neck and they are crimped to boot. The way to deal with it is to run them into the seater die and set the bullet a little deeper to break the seal. Then pull.
Also to add what has been said above is speed matters more than force.
Usually a sharp wrist action will do the job it does not take swinging the arm like you are driving nails.
I've had the best success with mine by whacking on the end grain of a 4X4 or 4X6, I keep a short piece next to my loading bench just for that purpose in fact. Not that I ever have to pull anything of course
Thanks guys for giving me the urge to really give the thing a whack. It worked, but it makes me really a bit nervous using it. I can't believe it didn't break. I have a Forster Co-ax press and I don't know of anything to use with it. Hopefully I won't make many mistakes.
