I have a savage .17 that has a feed problem. The first round in the 5 round mag does not feed most of the time. It is a bolt action and more often than not I have to stick a small screw driver in and lift up on the nose of the bullet to get it to feed as I push the bolt forward. Just curious if other have this problem and what, if anything did you do to correct it? A friend of mine suggested removing the mag spring and turning it 180, thinking that the mag
( push plate ) for lack of a better term, was putting more pressure at the rear than the front. As of yet I have not done this.

some of the Savage 17's

have had problems with the magazines locking in the right position. The next time you shoot it, hold up on the magazine as you chamber the round. If this fixes the problem, then you know what it is. I do not know if a new mag will fix the problem or not. A friend of mine and I both have Savage 17's. His has this problem and mine does not. His is also one of the earlier guns while mine is a later gun with the Accu-trigger.

What happens when you load 4 rnds in the mag.? Does the first of the 4 fail to feed also? If yes I would try another mag.

The lips that align the cartridge in the body of the mag are sore spots, they are made of thin metal and can be bent easily. Bending the lips usually causes more problems than it helps.

That push plate is called the magazine follower, and it usually has a specific profile to align the cartridge with the rifles feed ramp which in turn guides the nose of the bullet into the chamber. As your buddy advises disassemble the mag see how the mag spring attaches to the bottom of the follower see if you can reposition the spring to get the front of the follower to rise slightly higher than the rear (bend the spring) also look for binding spots in the body of the mag it may be binding the follower when loading five , you can use a file to trim the width of the follower slightly.

Just some tips hope it might help!

My model 93bv17 has the same problem with three out of 5 mags. I simple slap on the mag breaks them loose. I am not sure how to fix the problem.
