Howdy. Does anyone out there know if carrying in a bank is prohibited in Florida? Chap. 790 F.S. doesn't list a bank as a prohibited place, so I was wondering if there is some other state or federal law covering the matter.

Also, anybody know if in Florida you can legally carry while on private property if the property owner "prohibits" firearms? Thanks.

My understanding is: if they find out you are carrying (and there is no reason they should), they can ask you to leave. Only if you refuse to leave, can they have you arrested for trespassing. The signs carry no legal weight in Florida.
Not an attorney etc.

I generally avoid it as well. Unfortunately, the company I work for falls under this category. I'm not even "allowed" to have firearms in my vehicle. Such BS. MY car is MY property. I carry while at work anyway though. I couldn't find anything in the statutes regarding signs, and as Dr Dickie has now clarified for me, I thought it was a trespassing matter rather than a criminal offense. In other words, the way I see it: I'm exercising a natural right LEGALLY, I just won't tell anyone for fear of termination.

Funny Story About a Florida Bank and a CWP...

I'd pulled up to the drive-in teller window at Bank of America to cash a large check. Because of the amount, the bank wanted two forms of photo ID. In addition to my driver's license, I sent them my CWP.

A few minutes later, the teller asks me if I have another form of ID. I tell her I don't. She states that the bank does not recognize CWPs as valid forms of identification. I point out that my CWP is a State-issued document, bearing my photograph, name and address, just like my Florida Driver's License which they DO accept. The response?

"Sir, I know you THINK you have a valid form of ID, but it's not. If you like, you may come inside and speak with my manager."

Says I, "I'll be in in just a moment."

At this point, through the glass, I see another woman sprinting to the drive-thru teller's station. She grabs the mike and says, "Wait just a moment, sir."

So I do.

A couple minutes later, I hear a whirring noise, and the pneumatic tube thunks into its station beside my window. Inside are my driver's license, my CWP, and an envelope stuffed with cash.

If Florida banks are generally this skittish around the very possibility that anyone armed might walk through their doors, god help them if Floridians ever get open carry.

I have a standing bet with my wife that it's not against any law to carry a concealed weapon into a bank. She thinks it "just has to be against the law!!!"

It's proven impossible for me to prove that it is legal. All I can do is challenge her to prove it's not (which she has no interest in doing).

Guncrazy, you should've seen the look on this lady's face at the bank when I pulled out my CWL application for her to notarize. It was like something out of a Mastercard commercial... PRICELESS!

That's all those signs are good for here, to let you know who to avoid

In Florida if it does not say you can't then you can
