Going to order a Sp-101 as a project/bedside gun. I want to personalize it- hopefully doing most of the work myself.

Have any of you done any cosmetic work to your Sp-101?
What finishes can you apply to a stainless steel revolver?
Pictures?

Thanks for any ideas/help.

For me personally, i'd start with the grip. I like the nice solid feeling the SP101 has, but I can't get over the grip being too short to fill my hand. Though from what i heard a hogue aftermarket will take care of that nicely.

OK, re-reading the original post, I see the objective is do-it-yourself mods, rather than custom work by a gunsmith, but Gemini's site is still a good place to look at pics of sweet SP101s and other weapons. My oldest two SP101s were 'smithed by Jack Weigand, back in the day when he still did custom work, and would obtain the guns from Ruger, do his work on them, then send them on to dealers, who then sold them as new. Neither of mine are ported, but have the blasted finish, action jobs, and tritium front sights, and one that started with a hammer spur was de-horned. I prefer the factory grips, so that is what mine wear, though I recently obtained a set of Badger grips, and will try them.

The only DIY "custom" work I have done thus far is to make mine look like they have worked for a living; ankle and pocket carry are rough on a gun's finish, so mine have been scuffed, and along the edges, the blasted finsih has gotten a bit shiny.

My newest SP101 snubby has a hammer spur, which I wanted, so I can occasionally use it with a horizontal shoulder rig that has thumb-break retention. I got lucky with this one; its action is super-smooth, as received from the factory. More recently, I got myself a 4" SP101 in .32 H&R mag, but have yet to shoot it. I want to try a 3-1/16" version in .357 one of these days, too, and try it with longer-range shooting. My medium-sized hands, with short, skinny fingers, do well with the SP101. When my policing days are over, it is possible that SP101s may meet most all of my handgunning needs.

I followed the steps verbatim on the Ruger forum 'smithing section re tweaking an SP101 - and put the lightest Wolff springs in both the hammer and trigger return/latch. I also replaced the neat OEM grips with the larger Hogue rubber grips - now I have something to hold on to for a change. Mine is a 4" .32M - and has the cheesy windage-only adjustable rear sight. Still, while it came as the absolute worst-ever Ruger here, it is now a fun gun.

Get a nice NEW file and round off every corner and buff with a "Scotch-Brite" pad giving it a meltdown look. Some one did this and I have seen pictures and it looks great. If I ever break down and get an SP-101 that is what I am going to do.

Now if someone has a 3" one in 9mm for around $300, My Plastic is going to break.

Also there is a way to blacken SS but it supposedly does not wear well.

Nice brace of Rugers. :D I'd definitely go with a 3" .357, the Hogue grip, and put .38 +P in it for home duty. Finish and custom work? Well, all I CAN say is I'd avoid Gemini's porting. I hate porting, blinding in a home in low light, no thanks. And, it's harder on the ears.

i did a lot of work on mine by myself. i took the whole pistol apart and deburred all the internals. i knocked all the sharp corners offf the exterior of the gun, and even took off the "billboard". it took a while working on if for a couple of hours a night after work, but it turned out really well. i started the whole thing with 400 wet dry sandpaper and gradually finished up with 1500 grit. and then i took flitz to it. and because this is going to be my bedside gun, and i didn't want to have to worry about it at all, i sent it off to w.e. birdsong to have a coating of black-t put on it. i would post pics, but i don't have it back yet. the best help was from a guy that goes by "iowegan" over on rugerforum. he has all the info on what to do to lighten the trigger and disassemble the gun.

That's awesome - thanks guys. Keep them coming. :)

If any one has made theirs "dual-tone" or some how colored them, please post a pictue.

Seems like deburring is a good place to start. What about the porting? Not sure I like the Gemini porting ... wouldn't that blind you at night? Anyone have theirs ported by MagnaPort?

Thanks again.

I am not fond of porting... too 'loud'! BTW - Iowegan's best advice - the ziploc bag over the trigger group when you dissassemble/reassemble!

About the BHG - it's also a .32 H&RM - an 'SSM', to be exact. I did the 'poor man's free-spin pawl mod' - and fitted the Bisley hammer. Both revolvers share Ruger's almost too-large chamber ID - .337" - while ammo and commercial sizers are .334". It doesn't sound like much difference - but it makes a difference in brass life!

BTW, my favorite trivia re the SP101 - it was initially a .38 Special - changed to longer .357Ms when the larger frame opening and longer cylinders were fitted. Such models have an 'X' suffix.

Got my 3" last year. Added a 10# spring, polished it with some Mothers and put a Hogue on it. Nothing more I can really say I'd want done to it.

I've got the Hogue monogrip and a lighter springs in mine. I had a couple misfires (out of about 150 rounds) with a 10# hammer spring so I went up to 12#. I like mine a lot the way it is, but I wouldn't mind a fiber optic or maybe a gold bead front sight. Going beyond the DIY level, what I really want to get, when money's available, is a moonclip conversion.

My ideal SP101 project:
-3" DAO SP101 in .357
-1000rds of quality .357
-2 days of vacation time to burn the above ammo at the range

:)

Mine ended up as a Gemini project and it's a keeper.

I'll cast another vote for Gemini Customs as a source of inspiration, here's a like to the revolver page.

Gemini customs offers Badger grips, here's a link to the selection of SP101 grips on the Badger site. Note the two different sizes, standard and boot. Personally, I really like the look of white Corian grips on stainless steel.

These are not SP101s, of course, but S&W 640s, but you get the idea. Here is the high res version on the Gemini Customs site.
