I ordered a couple new mags for my S&W 469, a 15 round and a 20 round Promag for the 5906. The mags are apparently compatible between the 2nd gen and 3rd gen S&W auto loaders.

Has anyone had experience with these Promags? I hear some of them are garbage, like the 15 round Hi Point 9mm carbine mags.

I had an AR-15 10 rounder made by ProMag. The follower tilt was terrible; I never saw more than 2 rounds without a misfeed.

All I can say is no fANKS.

I've used Pro-Mags for the "compact" CZs, and they've been fine. Just about everything else has been a problem. The springs seem to be the main issue.

If you get them cheaply enough, and can replace the springs economically (from Wolff Springs), they might be OK. It's a gamble.

You can also send problem mags back to Pro-Mag, and generally try to make them right -- by sending others. sometimes it'll work out.

I'd go for Mec-Gars first, however.

Seemed like a great deal, new old stock on clearance for the holidays, got them both for $30. I'll give them a solid run through on the next day with decent weather, see how they turn out. Can't return them, and they had no Mec Gar mags at all.

Oh, I don't know about Promags being completely useless. I've used one as a target pretty successfully and another one came in handy to keep a jack from sinking in soft soil.

With pistols, I only buy OEM magazines or Mec-Gar.

As for returning them, if you bought the mags with a card (credit or debit) you probably have buyer protection. The card company will have details of how to get your money back.

For the price you paid, you can afford to buy a couple of Wolff springs. The mags will probably be 100% after that. (They may be alright for a while, regardless.)

Don't toss them automatically, and if you later buy Mec-Gars, the mags use the same springs -- so if you get them for the Pro-Mags and don't like the mags, the springs will work with the Mec-Gar mags if those springs ever give out. (And they will, eventually.)

Mec-Gar makes OEM mags for many of the guns we buy, so they tend to be the gold standard.

I have two pro mag magazines for my Hi Power and they are terrible. First time I shot both of them they worked flawlessly. After that one time with those two, never been able to get through one with only two failures. They are junk and I would avoid them as much as possible.

I bought three for my Model 39 at a gun show several years ago.

Two of them were too short for standard length 9mm ammo to fit in them.
The other one wouldn't feed.

They went on eBay with proper warnings & full disclosure for $5 bucks or so.

Some of the Promags are very good and have been for a long time now. The Promag 10rd Mini-14 mags are nearly identical to the 10rd factory mags that used to come with the Mini's. Some are not so good though. Most of the older (90's and older) Promags are fairly crappy. Mec-Gars are pretty good for the most part, but people talk them up a bit too much like they are the end all.

My only experience was with the two I bought for a Bersa .380. I thought it was weird that the mag springs came covered in thick white grease. But both mags functioned flawlessly and cost half the price of originals.

I have an assortment of mags for my 92FS. Have only had issues with the oem versions. My 20 round mec-gar works great. As does my 32 round promag. Matter of fact I have probably close to 500 rounds through the pro mag with no issues.

I bought two ProMag magazines, a year and a half apart, for two different guns. One was too big and got stuck halfway into the mag well and the other wouldn't feed a single round.

PROMAG = POOP!*

* ProMag makes it a challenge to remain "High Road."

I have never had any problems with any of the Pro Mags I have used. I currently am using 2 13 rounders in a Sig.($9.99 from CDNN) No problems. I would not stake my life on a Pro mag if I could find a Mecgar but for the range Ive never had any trouble even with weaker springs.

The only promag I've used was a 20 rounder for my Ruger pc40. It was an unnamed mag on sportsmansguide.com. It never jammed, but once the follower did pop out of the mag a little bit, and the mag got jammed in the gun. Had to rip it out.

Other than that...it was 100%...wouldn't bet my life on them though.

I bought two for my Mini 30 and have never had one feed more than four or five rounds between malfunctions. I'd give them away but none of my enemies own a mini 30.
On the plus side they make nice storage containers for spare ammo that you doint want clinking in your pockets as you walk in the woods.
