What is the proper way to test of there is enough neck tension on a bullet? I think I have my 300 mag problem figured out with being able to press in the bullet by hand. But I can still take a loaded round (no powder/primer) and am able to turn it upside down on the bench and press down with quite a bit of weight and press it in. Should I be able to do that?

It should take about 60 - 70 pounds of force to press a bullet into the case by hand. That is with 30-06 neck length. The .300 Win would be less due to the shorter neck I suppose.

I did some testing once with a bathroom scale and a big woodworkers vice!

That's why I always get a chuckle / cold chill when I see folks suggesting to try pushing the bullet in with your thumb!

If it's right, that is going to leave a mark!

Eowwww! :what:

The instructions on the bushing die sets, say to use a bushing that decreases the size of case neck to no more than 0.002" any more and the bullet will act like and expander die and open the case mouth.

I like to use powder mica to "lube" the interior and exterior of the case mouth. After the case neck is lubed and sized and the bullet is seated you could then use RC's scale method to get your "bullet grip" number on your case mouth.

Interesting.

Rcmodel always seems to have the correct answer. I hope to one day know as much about reloading as rcmodel has forgotten.

when I take the round with my thumb and middle finger and watch it go down into the case then I need to adjust my crimp die. :D

If the projectile pushes in that easily then the fault is in the sizing die/expander plug. The crimper might not solve that one.

Only if you're reloading RP, in .40SW. If you want them you can have them, but you'll have to dig them out of the scrap bucket. I just finished 5000 of 40SW once fired. Every other case was fine except the RP's
