Hello everyone,
I am very recoil sensitive due to arthritis at the base of my thumb and wrist. I love the 340 but it is quite painful for me to shoot. I know that it is intended to be shot little and carried a lot. I am wondering what the best way to grip the 340 is to minimize the recoil as much as possible. Currently, I turn my right thumb down and place my left thumb over my right thumb. I grip the gun tightly, with locked wrists and use the isoceles stance with arms locked out at the elbows. I have seen some people comment that a less painful stance is with the elbows slightly bent, therefore I posted this question to see what your advice would be. I shoot .38 only, not plus or .357. I do wear weightlifting gloves which have well padded palms and that does help. Anyways, I appreciate the advice and stay safe !

I've been shooting a J-frame a short time myself. Although I'm not sensitive to recoil, my large hands made it difficult to shoot using the standard grips. I've replaced with Pachmayr Compacs, which also have more cushioning -- and have lessened the recoil. Recommendation: Try more cushioned grips.

Welcome

to The High Road Jim.

I'm not saying that Jerry Miculek has a corner on the proper grip market, but this is how he handles a J Frame.

As OldOM indicated try some different grips. How do you plan to carry?
If pocket the Hogue Bantams are popular. For range trips but perhaps not pocket carry, the Hogue Mongrips are large with increased surface area and distribute the recoil well. They are also quite thick (cushion).

For pocket carry I like the Crimson Trace Laser grips. They provide an airpocket cushion up high where it counts and the rubber is thick at the same point. I also like point shooting with the laser. Train with it on and off.

Come see us on the 340 thread.

Thanks guys,
I have the 340 that came with the CT lasergrips. I have tried Miculek's grip but I guess my hands are not as big as his and can't quite get my left thumb to wrap around the base of my right thumb that far, but I have tried his grip as best I could. I wanted to post this question on the M&P thread but couldn't find a way to post a new thread there. Please transfer it over there if you can. Thanks,

Jim

I'm left handed. If only my left hurt, I would learn to shoot a j-frame right handed, prob take 2 days or so.

Try some Pachmayr Decellerator grips.
