Have an option to aquire a Mossberg 500 for 200 from a friend.

NO registration, taxes, etc...

Thoughts...??

Buy it.
The the thing i like the most with Mossberg 500's is their tang mounted safety which I consider ergonomically superior to the crossbolt safeties of most pump shotguns.
Especially if the shotgun is to be used for home defense.

Great buy and no paperwork. Whadderya waitin' on? :D

I much, much prefer the ergos on Mossbergs to any other gun except the BPS. I guess that's because I shoot left handed, but there are features like, the lack of a load elevator in the way of reloads and the location of the slide release that go beyond the tang safety and shooting lefty.

Mossbergs are rugged, reliable, working shotguns. They're nothing fancy, but built to get the job done. Great field guns, but not much for braggin' rights with your buddies. But, then, I know few pumps that are braggin' guns, even Brownings.

I'll never figure out why folks are so hooked on Wingmasters. Been there, done that, just another working pump gun with inferior ergos to the Mossberg. They're absolutely nothing special. If anyone thinks the 870 is THE end all of shotguns, they're living a fantasy. Good shotguns, but just a pump after all, nothing to write home about. I say this because there'll be some 870 fanatic in here dissing Mossberg sooner or later. The inevitable Ford vs Chevy thing. Either one will get you to work, I just like the way Mossberg gets me there a little better, that's all. YMMV, but for 200 bucks, you owe it to yourself to find out. :D

The only con about a Mossberg is the aluminum receiver, IMO, which is the incredibly minimal. For $200, as long as it's not HOT and it functions and there are no obvious problems (removed serial number, broken stock, etc) buy it!

I bought one a few years back for $150. I was broke and needed the cash and sold it for $175. Small profit but I kick myself now...

I just picked one up for $125, slugster bbl 24".

When I looked down the bore with my light it was bright and shiny, except for the dead spiders.

The man said it was in his closet for 12-15yrs. I said thank you sir and left.

Buy it now or regret it later.

and post pictures in the pump shotgun picture thread afterwards :)

I have a 500 and a Remington 870 in the "tactical" style. I prefer the Mossberg although the action might not be quite as slick. The tang safety is preferable, with only the exception that if you plan to put a stock on it with a pistol grip, the tang safety is out of reach.

Gave my 500 persuader its first range test yesterday. This was a big range that had a point-blank gallery for pistol-grip shotguns. Loaded it up, braced it on my hip and let her cut loose. Had this big goofy grin on my face the rest of the day. Gave it a light clean up today and there's so little to this gun - this is basic, reliable life-saving equipment. Even if I get another shotgun, I'll never get rid of this one.

That's what I bought mine for. 200 dollars slightly used but in great shape. It was my first gun, I got my first ever hunting kills with it. I have put probably 2k cheap Wal-Mart shells through it and it never once jammed or failed to fire.

I'm an 870 die hard, but I find loading a Mossberg 500/590 to be quicker and easier because you do not have to worry about overcoming the shell lifter. The tang safety is great as well since I shoot lefty. I love the 870, but generally you can get a newer Mossberg for less money.

the only con on a 500 isd the inability to extend the magazine, in my opinion.

minor con though, if 5-6 shots isnt enough out of a 12 gauge, the extra few PROBABLY wont help.

A Mossberg 500 has no cons, especially at $200.00!!! I bought mine because it had a tang safety, no external shell lifter, and it holds 8+1. I paid more than $200 and I do not regret it. If it is legal for you to own it and it is in good working conditon, buy it!

If it is in at least Vey Good condition, duh! Only change I'd urge is to replace the plastic safety, carefully, with a metal one.
Al

I'd jump on it like a hen jumps on a june bug!:D
Ain't nothing wrong with a Mossberg and the only one I ever saw broke ,which it wasn't was one a friend completley took apart and did not know how to reassemble.

The only con to the 500 at all is that it is not a 590. At $200.00 that is a very small quibble.

I have owned and shot them all and love the Mossberg. Quick to load up (no elevator)safety position, quick handling, never any mechanical issues. Should be sold by now, right??
