I`m going to be taking a long road trip through several states in the south and southwest. I generally try and keep my nose clean but it`s always nice to have a little extra ace up your sleeve when traveling far from home. None of the states I`ll be in honor my home state carry permit so I`m stuck with non gun weapons and such. I`m assuming that my EDC knife will be okay but I may have to check on mega folders. A big Maglite seems like it could come in hands both for light and as a hi tech big stick. Any other ideas of tips especially from those who travel a lot? Marcus

ASP baton...Pepper Spray...my old school favorite and old faithfull brass knux..or the 1 thing thatcan protect you and keep you safe...your brain, be aware stay alert and always be thinking...

Really tough to suggest to anyone to break the law & illegally carry a gun, so I won't. You know the risks in doing so and you have to make that decision on for yourself.
Other options; pepper spray is good. You can keep it on your belt at all times. The maglite is good too & will also function as light if need be. Heck, even a nice baseball bat would come in handy in a pinch. Also, the folding knife is a good idea. Any of these options in combination would work well too...Bat & pepper spray would make for a nasty combo!

As a VERY general "rule of thumb", a non-auto folder with a blade fractionally under 4" (as measured by stabbing penetration depth versus cutting edge) will be OK in most states (worn with the pocket clip exposed). Ditto OC spray.
UNLESS you're talking about "hyper-liberal zones" like NY/NJ/MA/etc.
Most folders with a "4 inch blade" are really 3.95" or so. I know Benchmade does this a lot, so do others.

At the risk of exposing my ignorance, are there laws prohibiting carrying, say, a 5-inch fixed blade hunting knife in the glove compartment? To be honest, it never even crossed my mind that it might be illegal. I don't pretend to know one way or the other.

This thread brings into focus the need for universal, interstate reciprocal validity of handgun licenses.
For one thing, the BGs may be armed with firearms. Should a private citizen be protected with less than equal authority? You have a fundamental right to protect yourself. The public needs to demand new laws to make handgun licenses valid in all states and cities.
If a BG wants to bash your head in with a club or other instrument of evil, you should be legally able to terminate the threat as quickly and efficiently as possible. Self defense against violent attack situations are not ones requiring the application of some kind of ludicrous fairness doctrine. Being 'fair' will probably get you killed. An adversary using any kind of weapon deserves to be immediately and decisively neutralized.
A super-duty Stun Gun would be a good defense tool, in addition to your favorite handgun. When either or both of these measures is illegal, your government is failing its citizenry.

I keep a 4" Cold Steel Cullodeon mounted on the sunvisor in my pickup. When the visor is up, you can't tell it's there. You can reach it quickly while buckled into your seat.
