I was thinking of adding a 1911 to my (small) collection. Sure, I'd love to have a Les Baer, Ed Brown or a Wilson Combat but the price is a little salty. Has anyone had any experience with the new Taurus PT1911? It seems to be reasonably priced with alot of features right out of the box. How does it shoot? Is it reliable with all types of ammo? Any pros or cons? Most of all, would you bet your life on it? Thanks in advance.

I've got two of them. Both shoot extremely well. I've never had a FTF, double feed, FTE, or really any sort of jam out of either. They'll feed anything. Hollowpoints, SWCs, fired cases, etc. I strongly suspect they'd feed rocks if I could find out ouw to crimp them. I've got close to 6000 rds downrange through the pair of them. The only trouble I've had was due in part to the fairly light recoil spring, and in part to some really hot +P ammo. Anyhow, that stuff broke a leg off the ejector, and broke the lock in the hammer, tieing up the gun. $85 to fix. Operating on the principle that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, I swapped out the hammer on the second one. I also bought a wolff spring kit, so I can tune the gun to the load I'm shooting. No problems since. And yes, I bet my life on one or the other every day.

Oh, one other thing. One of them had a burr on the mag release that had to be smoothed out before the mags would drop freely.

I heartily recommend them.

I've had one since November, runs great. Only had stoppage was with some Federal 165gr low-recoil hydrashoks (which I later found were problematic in many 45s). About 2500 rounds total with no other stoppages. Extractor on mine did some funny things to the brass, needs to get tuned (see http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=247507&highlight=brass ), but haven't heard of others having this issue.

Mine has been my carry gun for about 3 months, and like others, I've found that the finish is a bit thin, wearing off in a few places where it rubs the holster (my holster is kydex, not sure how leather treats the finish).

Definitely recommended if you want a range gun, but I might go with something with a thicker/harder finish if you want to carry it daily.

It is a very good 1911. Fit is very well done. I like the way the slide racks and the trigger pull. I read somewhere that it uses the Series 80 firing pin system. Is this true?

I love mine, and have had no problems with it through several hundred rounds. I am a big fan, to say the least.
