Is there a particular bullet weight that is best suited to the G3/HK91/PTR-91/CETME family? I recently purchased one (unrelated to the current chaos) and I intend to hunt for some of the limited ammo that remains.

Standard Ammo for NATO country's:
Caliber 7.62mm NATO, Ball, 150.5 grain bullet.
Germany used a 147 grain bullet in it's military G3.

If you are talking mil-sup ammo it will likely have a bullet weight very similar to those.

But if you intend to hunt with it, you don't want FMJ surplus military ammo.
In that case you want commercial SP hunting ammo, probably in the 150 - 165 -180 grain bullet weight range.

RC as usual you are right there with the answers - Thank you. I am just trying to get some ammo to shoot of any kind for a brand new PTR-91 that the seller doesn't seem to want to deliver (I suspect he has or will try to sell it from under me).

Seems I spanned from 147gr Radway Green to M118 & M118LR (172,173 &175 gr) in mine from time to time. The premium ammo was wasted in not realizing accuracy returns worthy of the cost of the ammo and the destruction of the cases.

It was very happy with GI surplus including de-link when that was cheap - what was that 147-148 grain?

Boy howdy, did that rascal chew up rims and nastify the case lengths.

I was wondering if the action was effected like my M1 Garand which it is apparent it is not from the posts here. I am very much leaning toward Wolf steel case ammo as I am aware how badly the cases get chewed up.

I was looking at Hornady steel case and they seem to be just as expensive as regular brass-cased ammo. I am trying to keep ammo costs for this rifle at a minimum when possible.

Bullet weight has no effect on the functioning of the G3/HK91 series. If it is an HK91 you be best served using 147gr. thru about 168gr. those rifles don't have a fast enough twist to utilize the heavier bullets effectively.

I use 150 gr. ballistic tips in my AR-10 for hogs. If I were after elk, I'd probably go with 180 gr. Sierras, but I have better options for those critters than trudging miles through the woods with a heavy and ballistically inferior 16" carbine when ranges are longer and rapid follow up shots are not necessary.

I shoot wolf and silver bear in my PTR-91. No problems what so ever. Just eats it up. If you get it, buy the cheap mags as soon as possible (if there are any left)

Way ahead of you. I bought 9 of the steel mags on CTD the day after they doubled in price ($4.97 each). This gun may not have been a panic buy for me but I'm obviously now caught in the middle of that. There's no gun store within 40 minutes of me so I guess I will have to ride this out.

I've been shooting wolf/Tula through mine without issue. I think the GI has 1-10" twist so it should shoot a heavier bullet.

The 155 Amax and Scenar bullets shoot just fine in mine. Both are length tolerant bullets and shoot amazingly.

Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine.
