Your opinions on the G3 platform and rifles

Well thanks fellas, I just got a bit of education, not that it matters now. Seems Springfield's SAR-3 of the 80s became an SAR-8. Why was that? Springfield always seemed to have a method to their madness in nomenclature, i.e. SAR-48 was for America's designation of the FN FAL as M-48, I expect SAR-3 was obviously derived from G3. Anybody know what happened there-was designation SAR-3 already taken by somebody else?

Still never saw one, be it 3 or 8.
