I'm in New Britian, CT on business for a few days. If there are any ranges within maybe a 45 min drive, I'll have some time to kill tomorrow evening. Have to rent a gun of course, but still fun. Suggestions?

Chris' Indoor Shooting Range, Route 1, Guilford. Should be about half an hour south of New Britain. Tel: 203-453-1570

There's also one somewhere in Wallingford, I believe, but I don't recall the name.

The only place I can think of to RENT and shoot a gun is S&W on Page Blvd up in Springfield Mass. It may be just about 45 minutes maybe a tad longer but worth the trip. You can "rent" any S&W on display for $25 with unlimited range time. They'll give you some targets and a full box of ammo. You can buy more ammo if you want. Once you've rented one you can take it back to them and tell them you want to compare and they are always happy to swap guns and let you try another for the original $25. You would have to buy more ammo if the second gun is a different caliber. The range is state of the art. I took the wifey up there to compare different caliber / weight J frames and they let us try 4 different models all for the same $25. They bent over backwards for us and won my undying love for doing so.

Call them for good directions, getting there is a little tricky because Page Blvd takes a turn at an intersection so it's easy to miss and get fouled up. At that point you stop and ask. Almost everybody knows where it's at. It's basically all highway 91 N to 291 E to Page Blvd

OR

You COULD hookup with me and I'll take you to my local range (MSI in Manchester) and let you shoot one or so of mine. I have a small selection of handguns I could let you shoot. You'll have to spring for some ammo though... :D

I'll PM my phone # if you're interested...

Wallingford Range

The wallingford indoor range is called New England Outfitters. It is about a 20 minute drive from New Britain and right off the highway. They rent guns. I'm going shooting at a club range in New britain today but they close at dusk. I can go tommorow during the day if you Pm me.

Ditto on New England Outfitters in Wallingford. Full service gun shop and they rent guns, and are full auto friendly (subgun calibers only). They have three pistol ranges if you include the one in the basement.

They also have a pretty nice 37 yard indoor archery range and a decent archery pro shop (specialize in Hoyt and Matthews, but don't you dare bring a Bowtech into the place).

Well I cut out of the last speaker of the meeting (like i'm going to go back to hear one last speaker after dinner) and got up to the range about 7:30. Very nice facility, and friendly helpful staff. They let me just pay the $25 rental fee once and then switch guns sa much as I wanted, buying only ammo. First tried out a 3" L-frame .357, then a standard type 1911 and a $2000 custom shop 1911 which did shoot quite a bit nicer than the standard one, and then a single-stack Tactical 9. I actually didn't realize how many different guns S&W produce, anf I was very impressed by the Tactical 9. Unfortunately I walked right by the display by the door. At any rate, it was a nice break from work, thanks agian for the advice.

Yea, if you don't know it's there the little museum is easy to miss. Mostly old prototypes if IRRC. Glad you went, I have to go up there soon myself. I have to compare the short 41 to the long one...

:D

m
