I live in Orange County, NY (a bit upstate from NYC) and as far as I know there's only one 100 yard range that's open to the public here, and it's indoors. I quite like it, but I'd like to shoot outdoors if possible. Does anyone know of a 100+ yard range that's outdoors and open to the public in Orange or any of the surrounding counties? Is there anywhere I can shoot on public lands?

thanks.

There was a range in Westchester (or maybe south Putnam) county that was outdoors and run by the state. It was somewhat onerous, single load only kind of rules, and this was about 15 years ago when I lived in the area.

Sorry I can't remember better than that. For all I know, it has been closed down.

Check out Orange County NY Shooters if you haven't already.

100 yd. targets $8 per hour $10
Small Bore-
Target Range $6 per hour $8
Pistol Range * $6 per hour $8
Trap & Skeet-
4 Combination Fields
* NYS pistol permit required and checked for pistol range!

The rifle ranges have that "load 1, fire 1" BS. Don't bother bringing any EBRs. :cuss:

That place sounds pretty good, thanks! I guess I won't be finding out how fast my enfields can go, but that's okay.

Why do you want people that don't own guns and shoot to pay for your hobby? If you do, then start playing tennis or golf. :what:  :cuss:

There's a taxpayer funded tennis court at the local college and city park. Who decides on the sports the get public funds?

I didn't ask for more questions. Just state what you have to say and its relevance to the thread.

Are you mistaking 'open to the public' and 'publicly funded'?

I think there are one or two ranges in Port Jervis but I haven't been to them. I'm in Sullivan County on the Delaware, and there is some state land near me that you can shoot pretty much anything at, but it's about 80 yards max

It's just too bad that you are in Orange County. If you go further upstate or more into Western NY ranges abound. I've only ever shot at a few public ranges; I'll always take a trip to shoot with friends. Usually I just shoot in my backyard though.
