Public restroom oops

I know I try never to take my gun off in a public place. On a couple of occassions I have and I try to remain single minded until it is back in the holster. This probably happens more than we know.

The usual advise is to never take it off, and be careful how you put it down.
Most suggest that you fold you waistband over so it rest inside you pants and then hold tension with you legs to keep your pants off the floor.

Things like this and negligent discharges will continue to happen at a non-zero-rate as long as guns are removed from perfectly good holsters as part of "making a log entry"
Not to even get into the ewwwww factor of handling your weapon with poopy hands, it is measurably less safe than a carry method and plan to simply leave the gun in the holster.

Imagine your favorite celebrity doing a PSA here:
"folks, leave your heater where it can't be left behind or discharged in a moment of stupidity, don't take your gun out of the holster to deliver a twosie"
<insert "the more you know" graphic>

Even if it has to dangle around your ankles, keep it holstered and attached to your belt so you know where it is at all times. I tend to be such a forgetful type myself. :uhoh:

This is a distinct advantage of the shoulder holster. ;)

This happened very near where I live. Two teenage boys found the pistol, told their mother who alerted the store manager who called the Sheriff's Dept. The owner saw the news at 6 segment and THEN thought about where his pistol was. The Sheriff says he will report it the Probate Judge in the county. Luckily, the boys acted responsibly.

 Never, Never, Never, Never............ EVER! TAKE IT OFF IN PUBLIC!
Losing a gun in a bathroom is not the same as taking off and loosing your watch!

Go in the stall....unholster your pistol... Drop your drawers, sit down and place your gun on your pants / underwear. When you are done, retrieve the pistol, stand, pull up your pants at the same time.... place pistol in your weak side armpit...button trousers, reholster.

This keeps the pistol in a place where when you are sitting you can control it. Pistols left holstered are dangling off your belt down by your ankle. This leaves them vulnerable to being taken by someone reaching under the stall wall. Further your gun is potentially near the floor where the last guy wizzed.

I have been doing this as I described for the last 20 years or so. Works for me.

Someone needs to make a pouch that will hold the gun and be hung by a neck strap. Maybe dispense it from a machine like a... well one of those things or one of those woman things.

I consider this to be a bad idea since other people can usually see it. Most stalls are narrow and the walls/door don't go all the way to the floor. Look under the doors as you walk by. If you can see feet others will be able to see your gun.

I usually try to use the handicap stalls since they are large enough that others can't reach under the door/wall to grab something on the floor next to the toilet. I lay my gun on the paper dispenser if I can. If not it goes into a coat pocket and the coat gets hung up if there is something to hang it on that is far enough from the door. If not, the coat goes on the floor between me and a solid wall.

Before you leave, scan the entire stall. I've never forgotten a gun but I have found a pair of glasses or a wallet that has fallen out of a pocket while I was sitting down.

I prefer to carry my firearm in a shoulder holster.
In the stall, it's still under control and in my possession.
When it's hot, and I can't wear a shoulder holster, a J-frame S&W or Walther PPK are in my jeans pocket. Pants get lowered carefully.
The point is, I never put my handgun on a shelf or ledge where it might fall, or be forgotten after I've completed the paperwork.

A couple of years ago, a CCW license holder dropped his pants with a Glock .40 in a belt holster in the stall. The gun fired and shot the porcelain. It was news for more than a week in the local media, with the usually rude comments (and everyone thought they were a comedian with new material).

I keep my handgun under careful control at all times.
It's called, "responsible gun ownership."

I take mine off, holster and all (S&W 442 with a DB Bullard IWB) and set in on the toilet paper dispenser. I guess I'm the only one who is smart enough to put it back on.

For those of you who would forget to put it back on, try Ginkgo Biloba.

Looks like an SP2340.

Just another crazy old retiree leaving guns all over the place. There's a time when grandpa needs to switch to pepper spray. Just saying.

Newton, I'm old by many standards, I've been called crazy by a few, and I carry pepper spray. I also carry at least one handgun all the time and have for at least 40 years. I've never left any handgun anywhere it did not belong. Must I turn in my guns?

Once my wife and I where at a discount store, and I had noticed the security guard was wearing an empty holster! This was long before I brought my first firearm and got interested in our culture, so i had no idea what i was looking at, thinking "what good is an empty holster, what is he going to do with that" now i wish i would have alerted him to it's disappearance.

NO unless you have been found to be mentally challenged by a psychiatrist.
