I'm looking for a cheap but reliable pump shotgun to stow permanently in my vehicle. My lgs is selling 12 gauge Winchester "Super-X Defender" shotguns with 18" barrels for $279.99. Anybody know anything about these shotguns? Is the sale price a good price? Thanks all.

It's the same basic design as the older US made gun From what I can tell, but it's manufactured (IIRC) in Turkey and imported.

Take a look at one of the big box sporting goods stores and see what they're asking for the H&R Pardner pump these days. Those are Chinese manufactured copies of the Remington 870 (with a slightly different receiver shape) and seem to be doing pretty well in use.

I recently bought a nice old Ithaca 37 for my Grandson for $175.00 in very good condition for his truck gun. I find most of these old guns have a lot of life left in them. If the chamber and internals are sound that is the way to go for home defense too. Just a thought. Snoop

I gave it a look today and it indeed is configured (at least externally) very much like a Winchester Model 1300 I have. I compared it with a Mossberg Maverick that the store was selling for $229.99 but I was unimpressed with this economy model Mossberg (Mossberg even dispensed with the tang safety on the Maverick that I prefer on their regular model 500s). Anyhow, I went ahead and purchased the Winchester Model 1300 wannabe. I really didn't want to put much money into a shotgun that will always be stashed in my truck. Thanks everybody for your inputs.

I paid $177 for my Maverick 88 about a year ago. That's about the most expensive gun I'd consider leaving in my truck.

Why not just get an 18" barrel for your Winchester, or find a used one and have it cut down. You can remove the plug for extra capacity and just install it when using it to hunt. That's what I did with mine because I really love my 1300 and having it serve double duty just makes it that much better! Just an idea.

Go on armslist.com and post that you're looking for a basic used pump shotgun. I did and had about 20 local contacts from people offering all sorts of pumps for $150-$200. Mossberg 500 and Remington 870 are great choices, and the most customizable.
