Drudge showed Putin examining an apparently dead Tiger that he supposedly killed. Later, they changed the photo to this one. Anyone know what this rifle is? A tranquilizer dart gun?
Well, regardless, this is for local consumption and is calculated to improve or enhance his appearance at home. It isn't meant for us.
This does lead to a question, though. Would this dart gun be rifled or would it be smooth-bored, relying on the dart's construction to guarantee straight flight? I would imagine smooth only.
We agree that is the kind of gun. I would imagine it would rely solely on the dart's fletching and so would be a smoothie. I don't know if there are other projectiles which might be used. Darts are all I know about, but I suppose there could be some kind of spin-stabilized dart out there.
Of course, I wonder why he was decked out in camo to knock out a tiger?
The news program I heard this morning said "he saved, the naturalists lives by retranqulizing the tiger that was waking up to soon, while they were installing the GPS collars". Yeah saved my A##, you bet it was a publicity picture.
About like the ones they did with Kerry in the hunting coat back in '04.
The Rifle Forum is for talking about Rifles. It is not for politics, global strategy or opining about which world leaders you like. Merely because the rifle in question is Russian is not an invitation to relate it to world news of the day.
This is the fourth thread since August I have had to clean up merely because the rifle in question was Russian and I am not doing it any more. Instead I am going to start banning the users who can't seem to grasp this simple rule - and I am going to start today with anyone who made comments in any of the previous three threads and still didn't get the hint in this one.
Seems that I've seen pictures of Putin shooting at gun ranges before. It appears he enjoys shooting guns just like we do. I'm not sure that I'd want to go after a tiger, but I'm sure many American big game hunters would jump at the chance even if it was just with a tranquilizer gun. Publicity photo motivations aside, the man has more courage than I to willingly venture into tiger territory. This has made me a bit curious to know about just what kind of air rifles are used to deliver tranquilizer darts to big / dangerous game. Anyone know anything even in general about the rifles?
I don't know much about air rifles, but id assume that thing has to get a dart up to a pretty good velocity in order for it to stick in a tiger. mind you I don't know for sure but they have to have relatively thick skin.
I assume said rifle is semi auto? I didn't get a good look at the picture.
isn't he ex kgb? not to bring up politics, but if he is, I could totally see him being a relatively regular, if not avid shooter. got to imagine hed have weapons training.
A tiger moves easily about 30 feet per second and the tranquilizing drug takes on average 10 minutes to take affect. If you hit muscle. I don’t now the range of the rifle but I'm willing to bet the tiger was out of it.
