So, a late-night "best offer" on Gunbroker turned into a Savage 7mag round back/non-Accu trigger.
https://www.gunbroker.com/item/969122976

While both stoked that I managed to get it for about 1/2 what they go for out here, AND that I have a new project after almost 6 months of not working on anything. It left me at a bit of a loss.....what do I actually WANT this thing for?

I noodled that one around for a while.
MOST of the options being not exactly the right fit for the receiver length (7mmPRC, .264WM, .458Win) or bolt face (.270AI fast twist, 6.5-06AI), or this (7mag fast twist), that (300WM fast twist) or the other thing(s).....What I did keep coming back to was that Shaw had 300PRC barrels ready to go, and I've wanted to try one...Heck I already load for it.

The reason I haven't built/bought a 300PRC is simply that Ive got pretty much all of MY long, and long long, range stuff covered by my 6.5CM and 7mms of some sort.
BUT my dad has been using my S20 for his longer-range rifle, and it's not really Ideal for that with its 1-9.5 twist....It also means that nothing is set up the way I want when I feel like taking it hunting. That seemed like plenty enough reason to go ahead with the build.

The build will also have the versatility of being a savage, so while the .300PRC will give him plenty of BC and energy for any range or hunting task he might decide he wants to try, we can convert the rifle back to 7mm (might get the barrel threaded for a muzzle brake) for him to hunt with if he doesn't want to lug the 300, or deal with the recoil.

The parts necessary for the conversion are mostly savage and had I just BOUGHT a 300PRC Long-range hunter it would have been very close in price....this is more fun tho, and offers some added versatility. It also doesn't include the Accu-trigger which I dislike.
Anyway, the only parts I needed to order were the barrel, which Troy helped with, a rail, and the AICS magazine bits.
I will probably be ordering a Boyd's ProV stock here in the near future, but that's gonna wait till after we spend some time behind the gun.

All the parts besides the rail actually showed up on Friday, and I got most of the work done setting everything up in the last couple days.
The action has been bedded to the stock, and the forend channel opened for the heavier barrel.
I also polished the trigger contact surfaces, pinched the housing in to reduce side-to-side movement, and installed a trigger stop screw as well as a lighter longer return spring (we were talking about the MCARBO kits in another thread, and this is the 5-dollar version thereof lol).

I need to get some brass from Dell, who STILL hasn't shot the Seekins 300prc he bought last year.....im really hoping the savage holds its own accuracy wise, that'll twist his whiskers.....

I have a few 168 and 180 bullet options, as well as 208 ELDMs, and 212 ELDXs on hand. Im probably going to order 215 Bergers, and a box or two of the heavies.....not sure what yet.
Powders I have Ret, H1K, Imr7828, and RL-33...everything else is a little on the fast side I think....Ill have to go look again.

Anyway, Ill get more pictures after I pretty up the stock and give it a paint job....Ill probably make an adjustable comb riser also after I find some plastic.

Awesome Build I can’t wait to see how it shoots I think the .300 PRC is going to be the best 30 cal mag possible at this time
I think as a factory option it is. The 300WM and the 30 Nosler are both excellent options as well, but the stock throats are too short on both for the heavy vlds.

Got the stock cleaned up and painted tonight, should be dry enough to reassemble for pictures tomorrow. Im going to see if the Burris 6.5-20 ive got fits on the gun with the mounts that came with it and the random turn-in rings I have. Ill probably end up ordering another Arken to go on this one eventually....or just bite the bullet and buy my buddies Mil Ep5.

Out of random curiosity, and the fact that I have close to 500 pieces of .375 ruger brass, I decided to make a set of 300PRC from some of the older cases. Well see how they do in comparison to actual PRC brass.

Great project. I’ve no personal interest in the 300 PRC but enjoy watching your builds. I am starting on a 7mm PRC. All necessary components are either already here or on order. Setback yesterday: I was unable to remove the barrel from the donor action. Could not get sufficient purchase on the barrel to keep it from slipping in my Wheeler barrel vise. I’ll have to take it to my smith for removal. I’ll start another thread before too long. In the meantime I’ll tag along here for vicarious enjoyment.

Got the riser finished, and all installed. The adjustment lock screws are on the right side of the stock, on the left there are screws set in to basically act as guides and not actually tension the riser. Got the Burris FF1 mounted in leupy bases and .....millet.....engraved....turn in rings....makes for a very low key package.

Painted the stock and riser last night, so here are the pictures all ready to go.

300PRC!

So, if I had a Ruger Long Range Hunter and I wanted to convert it to 300PRC, all I would need is a barrel?
I do not know why ask, since the recoil is a bit too much now that I am a silly old man.
The Rugers action is too short for the 300prc afaik.

Recoil can be attenuated by going with a heavier gun, or a muzzlebrake/suppressor, and a squishy pad.
This rifle for my dad will have all three.
He dosent like shooting my 7lb 7-08 Mesa sans brake, but dosent mind the 10lb 7mag S20 or 13lb 28 Nosler Mesa LR.

300PRC!
That was a steal! Looking good in current state! So is it finished?
How long did it take you to get from original rifle to current?

Thank you for your response.
I have a Ruger 300 Win Mag that has not seen action in a few years now, with a good stash of hunting ammo. It has a good muzzle brake and pad, and it is heavy, so, shooting it is not bad at all.
I had forgotten how much recoil comes out of a very light hunting rifle, and I decided to verify scope on a .308. The rifle weights about 5 pounds, and I only fired 3 rounds that produced a sore shoulder for the rest of the range day.
BTW, your rifle looks very good!

I headspaced and torqued the barrel last night, so untill i get the 20moa EGW rail, and the Arken (just getting the Mil EP5 from my buddy Del) its done.

Id guess about 2-3hrs including the painting. I had some issues that added to the time.

Yeah light guns can be surprisingly unpleasant lol.

Thanks guys!

I forgot to mention that im looking forward to reading about your build alot, the 7prc is on my list of "must do" rounds.
If you arnt going to keep the barrel you can make a relief cut just in front of the receiver. Ive had to so that a couple times.

Like the paint job, not usually a fan of that sort of thing. I enjoy following your builds. I’ve been passively looking for a savage action to try my hand at putting a rifle together, the pre fit barrels look pretty straight forward to install. Your really making me want to dive in. The idea of a bolt gun with multiple barrels is also very appealing to me. I know you have built one in the past. Did you post about thread about that build?
Thanks

208 ELD
80gr puts out 2900 with an ES of 20
81gr 2940 ES of 15, sticky extraction.
82gr 2950 ES in the 20, stuck the bolt closed.

212ELDX (only had a few of these loaded)
78gr 2880
79gr 2910
80gr 2954 sticky extraction.

No other signs of pressure besides sticky bolt, gonna work between 78-80 next time out as accuracy is running around MOA and 2850-2900 is plenty fast enough.

I find this thing mildly unpleasant to shoot even at 11lbs. Im pretty sure its the stock design and the fact the recoil pad is only slowing the gun down a little before you get hit by the backer plate....so adding to the parts list
Fit new recoil pad (i have a bunch)
Order ProV stock sooner rather than later
Order a new brake...probably going to go with NWP as I've had a few and like them quite well.

Well done!

Is your favorite shooting area still closed or has the mountain calmed down enough to get up there?

Stay safe.
Its on the other mountain lol. The eruption on maunaloa has subsided, or whatever its called when it stops coming out of the vent. I just hit the 16mile marker range this morning tho, its not worth driving all the way up to the where we shoot distance for chrono work and initial testing.
