I'm wondering, what is the most durable matte slate or black finish finish for a semi-auto? I'm thinking of doing my other Browning HP in a field and tactically useful finish (BHP#1 has NP3). Anyone have a word on a dark finish on his or her gun that they are happy with? I don't want it to chip, flake or peel, and the tougher the better.

What--no shiny finish??? Sharps, are you going soft on us? ;)

You have some great looking pistols in your collection. I look forward to seeing how this one comes out...

Oh, I can go stealth now and then. (Haha!) Here's my Caspian 10mm with conversions, with Birdsongs "Green-T" finish. Unless there is something better, I will probably go back to them for the "Black-T' on the BHP. Also shown is the other BHP with NP3, for when stealth is not the biggest requirement.

Then go with Ion Bond. It can't chip, flake, or peel. Seems almost impervious to wear. Great against rust. Here's a slide:

Melonite or Ion Bond. Melonite is probably tougher (and has the side benefit of making contact points more wear-resistant) but Ion Bond can be had in different colors and it's probably a little bit more corrosion resistant.

Here's my Springer done with atranite. No complaints. The outfit that did it offers $25 lifetime recoating if necessary/requested.

This pic was taken with a flash. It's really very matte. You can see the contrast with the Alumagrips.

Toughest

Tenifer. I have tried to rust Glocks. In New England: sea air, humidity, you name it. I have managed to rust the replacement sights, but not the gun.

And no: I don't mean just no rust on the plastic, I mean no rust on the metal parts!

Not a top coat like paint or say ceramic. They bond with the metal and actually harden the surface while changing the color. As I understand it they also have catastrophic results when applied incorrectly as has been witnessed by owners. I saw a posting by an M&P owner whose entire slide was pitted after a few months and they're stainless.

I recommended Hardhat for its similar properties, applied by a professional who will properly prep and coat the pistol. Price quotes are best left to Dave and staff. He is a frequent contributor on another forum and has a well earned reputation for quality work.

Tenifer, as applied to Glock products is a great finish, but it does wear. I have an older G-21 that the finish is wearing off the slide from holster wear (both leather & kydex) and manipulation. However it has never rusted, and is not cleaned very often.

That's because the tenifer is the metal treatment. The superficial coating is I believe a parkerizing.
