As my AK conversion draws closer to an end I get the freedom of looking at things like aesthetics more. As far as durability goes, it seems like the word on the street is that high temp engine paint is the way to go, so that's what I got (Rustoleum brand). It has quite a reputation for being tough, but when I painted my gas block it turned out as a matte gray, in pretty sharp contrast to the semi gloss of the barrel and the receiver, which I like. I imagined the whole rifle in this finish, and didn't like it.
My question is: can I simply paint over the engine paint with a semi gloss black and get the benefits of the tough stuff underneath, but with the look of the original factory finish? If so, what do you recommend that would replicate the look of the factory Saiga finish?

You should really look at a bake on finish. I used kggunkote. All you need is an airbrush or a half gun and a small compressor. I goes on thin, it's flexible and wears great. It's about 10 bucks and you can spray several rifles with the can. I did my Draco with it along with a few rifles.

They have a lot of colors available and it wont go on as thick and gum your action up.

I went with the Rustoleum Engine Enamel. I know baked on finishes are generally better, but I'm wanting to stay as true as possible to the look of the factory finish. The Enamel will be semi-glossy, which is what I need. Nice Draco by the way.
