I have a sixteen inch M4 upper on my AR-15. It has a carry handle (that i would like to reatin) and basic USGI sights. It does NOT have a red dot or any optics.

Is it possible to put a good set of National Match sights on the upper? What size aperture, hood and front sight post will work with the shorter sight radius? Anyone ever tried this?

I have NM sights on my M1A Super Match and love them. I like the simplicity of iron sights but was looking to improve them.

Any help would be appreciated.

If its removable you could get the Rock River NM carry handle and either keep your front sight post or get a narrow one. Be aware that AR NM apertures are smaller than the garand style hooded sight on your m1a but you shoot an AR with your eye closer to the rear sight.

If its not a removable handle you can get NM parts from Fulton Armory and build your own on your receiver. If you just want the aperture you can probably describe what you have and they'll make sure you get the right part.

Bravo for shooting irons, by the way.

You may have a height compatability problem with the RRA handle. I believe RRA uses standard A2 front sight bases (not "F" marked) on all their guns, and the elevation of their handles is adjusted to match.

BTW I found a RRA handle was the solution to a "F" marked base on a 20" BCM upper I have. The "milspec" height handle wouldn't work well with the "F" marked sight on the 20" barrel. It is supposed to, but I found I had to unscrew the front sight post farther than I wanted to in order to get zero'd.

BTW, if you want optimum iron sight shooting and a 16" barrel, I would trade off the M4 upper for mid-length with a longer sight radius.

The best rear sight I have used on a flat top upper is the LMT rear sight. It's a A2 style, detachable, add the NM aperture and a NM front post and you have a very nice setup.

How does the LMT sight compare to Daniel Defense's fixed rear sight? My plan is to put the best rear iron sight I can afford, since quality optics are not in the budget right now, and I also really want my AR to be light as possible.
