Among my toys is a custom Remington 700 that I had rebarreled and chambered in .244 Remington Ackley Improved. I've fireformed a fair amount of brass and am beginning to work up some loads in the fireformed cases. I shot some uninspiring groups with a new load today and finished off the target by fireforming some more brass. The bullet I use for fireforming is an 80g Remington Power Lokt driven by a near max charge of AA2700. Near max for the .244 Remington, well under max for the improved case. This load does a very nice job of fireforming the case and it is exceptionally accurate. I was working on the lower left group on this target when a fat fly had the temerity to land on the target. Good shooting.

Salami stapled to the target stand is also good for a little light game hunting while at the range. Peanut butter works well too. :D
 
I dunno, looks like you've got some extreme over-penetration issues to ethically use that gun for fly hunting. :neener:

Makes me want to go the range and pour syrup all over a target and then just sit there and wait.

I had almost as good a time once....

I was playing with my Kimber 84M 22-250 when a grasshopper jumped up on my target. Smacked him. But he was much larger than any fly.

That kind of shooting builds your confidence doesn't it?

Many, many years ago, when I was a kidlet, we were into .22 target rifles. My buddy & I were shooting at a public range in Kennelworth, NJ, when a fly landed on his target. Being the rich kid, he had a scope on his rifle. One shot later, there was a .22 hole with two fly wings, one on either side, on his target. I always remembered that shot.

PS- would this be the same as 6mm Remington, Improved? I have a 6mm Remington custom. Unfortunately, the gunsmith buggered it up, so I need to have a lot of work done on it before I can really use it.
 
.244 Remington was withdrawn from the market because it would not stabilize heavier bullets and didn't sell as well as .243 Winchester. In 1964 Remington replaced the .244 Remington with the 6mm Remington and a nine inch twist. The cases are dimensionally identical. I called mine .244 Remington Ackley Improved because it has a twelve inch twist and technically; Parker Ackley never improved the 6mm, he did his work on the .244.

So far I think I made the right choice. :)
 
That's right. Is this a varmint piece for you, or...? Are you using the 80 grain PL
because of intended target, or does your rifle just shoot best with this weight?
 
I am using the 80g Power Lokt because they're cheap and because the weight gives a lower velocity that is not as hard on the barrel. I did not expect the outstanding accuracy I am seeing with these bullets and fireforming loads. I didn't even neck size the brass, just loaded it and will trim it afterwards. These bullets are giving me a renewed respect for Remington components. I planed on shooting mostly 58-75g vmax and 70g match kings with it. If it keeps shooting these remingtons I might just have to shoot what works.

After shooting the fly I shot five 58g vmax rounds into a .455 edge to edge group. These were loaded in already formed brass so I can see that the rifle is beginning to shoot very well. I hope the load stays consistant since that was a starting charge for the bullet.
 
Thanks for all the info. Hope to wring some of that goodness out of my 6mm eventually.
