Hey folks,

I have a few questions.

I am new to shotshell loading, but not entirely new to reloading. (I have had a Dillon XL650 for many years now and reload for .357 mag, .45 ACP and 10mm). So anyhoo...I recently purchased a Hornady 366 shotshell press and am looking for hulls to reload with.

I have "Lyman's Shotshell Reloading Handbook - 5th Edition," which happens to be excellent in answering most of my questions. But here's one that I am not quite sure of:

What are good "Win AA" hulls?

In the Lyman book it gives reloading information for "Winchester HS or Compression-Formed Plastic Cases". But when I do a search for hulls (like on E-Bay) they do not give this information. They just say "Winchester AA hulls"...or "Grey Winchester AA hulls". Nothing else.

How am I supposed to tell if they are "Win HS" or "Compression-Formed Plastic"?

Am I to assume that all "Win AA hulls" are HS or Compression-Formed?

Or better yet, can yall share some good sources to purchase hulls at a good price?

And what about they "Win AA grey hulls? Are they any good?

Thanks for helping out this newbie!

I just retired about 3,000 Win AA hulls that have been fired eight times. I'm replacing them with 5,000 once fired Win AA hulls that I bought for 3 cents each.

Winchester used to make a single piece plastic hull. Now they make a two piece plastic hull. You can hold the empty hull up to the sunlight and see a second liner piece inside the bottom inch (or so) of the hull base. Ask if they are one or two piece before you buy.

I have several friends that shoot AA's that have switched from Claybuster wads to Bluebusters because the Claybuster sticks (snaps) when it hits the inner piece of the AA two piece hull. This does happen.

I am not happy with Winchester's cheapening of their hull.

I have about a 1,000 Remington green and gold hulls. I may switch to them. I may also pick up the Game Clubs that I see thousands of and reload them once or twice before discarding.

I suspect my problem is that I have ownership (ego) in my Win AA hulls.

Just my remblin' 2 cents worth.

Congrats on getting into shotshell reloading. You'll find you can make a AA quality shell for a Walmart cheapoload price.

Win AA hulls come in two flavors: Old and New. Color really doesn't matter except that some people use the color for different loads (i.e. Red for Trap, Gray for Skeet loads).

Old and New can be loaded similiarly using any light to moderate target re-loading data. Check your powder manufacturers data to make sure. You've also got a PM and an e-mail.

You won't regret it. I do use Winchester's primers, though.

Good for 6-8 times, depending on how picky you are. (Gun Clubs, Sport Loads, etc.) They're not STS's, but they're amazingly durable for reloading. I do suggest sizing bases with collet sizer, if you don't do this already.

To get into reloading, that's what I'd suggest. Buy a few boxes of Sport Loads from Wally World, shoot them, then reload the hulls. When you go shooting, you'll find more once-fired ones in buckets. My enormous collection of once-fired STS hulls sits idle, since I can replace my worn-out Sport Load/Gun Club hulls for free whenever I shoot.:)

I shoot them mixed in with STS hulls, and they shoot the same.

Thanks, guys.

After much thought and consideration, I decided to stay away from the "AA" hulls and went with the Remmy STS instead.

I see that they are pretty comparable in price, and I recently purchased 1000 of the STS's for pretty cheap on E-Bay.

Thanks again!
