i'm interested to know which Winchester model 70 30-06 I own. it has walnut checkered stock with a raised cheek-piece and the pistol-grip is capped. The forend is checkered but does not have a black plastic tip. it has a jeweled bolt. it doesn't have a floor plate. I'm leaning towards the "ranger" but the info im getting on google is that they are marked ranger on the barrel. I have pictures I can send to whoever wants to guess. please send info to my email [email protected] thank you

It was a cheaper rifle in the lineup because the blind magazine is cheaper than a hinged floorplate and because it is cheaper not to attach a foreend tip than to put one on, etc.

I don't think they had a lower quality of receiver or barrel that they put on them, though.
It ought to shoot as well as a standard model 70 with a fancier stock.

I think the stock is pretty well styled, it didn't have to be ugly just because it was a low end rifle.

It was sold as direct competition to the Remington 700 ADL version.

The Rem 700 BDL had a hinged floor-plate, butt & forend cap, and a few other things.
As did the standard Model 70.

In 1977, a standard Model 70 had an MSRP of $250.
The Model 70A was $215.

Remington 700 BDL was $244.95.
700 ADL was $214.95.

thanks guys. now I wish I could just get my 4 hours back googling it this morning.

No, I had a Win 70A once, Win Model 70's several times, and a few Rem 700 ADL & BDL's a few times too, a long time ago.
So I knew the differances.

I did have to look up the 1977 prices in a 1977 Guns & Ammo annual today though.

I had forgot the exact MSRP price comparisons of the time.
