I'm in the mist of trying to determine the caliber of a recently acquired rifle. It's a custom rifle without any caliber marking, .22 bore, long action mauser 98 action. I'm in process of trying to make a chamber casting. What I would like to know is the case diameter of the 22-250 case right before it tapers down. My references are old and include the 220 swift but not the 22-250. Thanks in advance.

Your reference must be very old indeed since the 22-250 was a factory round as long ago as the '60's. Time for a new reference book? :)

The 22-250 case is nominally .4697 at the start of the web and tapers to .4142 at the start of the shoulder. Rim diameter is .4730, shoulder angle is 28 deg. Those dimensions should define the case fairly well, but be aware that the chamber of 22-250 rifle won't necessarily reflect those exact dimensions, but the shoulder angle and relative taper differences should be the same.

You are absolutely correct. I do need new references. I have been in this game a long time but havn't had a need until now to update. Thanks loads for your response, it should be a big help. These numbers should show a large difference between the 22-250 and the 220 swift. Is it even possible to insert a 22-250 shell into a 220 swift chamber?
