Question about .22LR bolt action

I went out and plinked with my friends and fell in love with a bolt action .22LR Marlin (I think it was a 25N but I probably wrong). It didn't have iron sights (removed to make room for scope), a magazine (lost at some point in its life I assume) or even a scope (removed or lost presumably) but even with it as a single shot and no sights at all, it was a blast to fire. It was fairly used and I wondered what a good trade or price offer would be for the rifle.

This would be my second rifle purchase or trade, my first being a ruger 10/22 and I would sooner part with a limb then that rifle (sentimental value and all). If trading other items of matched worth or buying the gun isn't possible, what would a good bolt action .22LR cost? I wouldn't mind getting a pre-loved one at a pawn shop but what would I have to look for, new or used? What models should I look for? I don't have much along price range, but I can realistically save $200 to $400 dollars.

Any thoughts appreciated, this is my first post I think so looking forward to being a member of THR.
 
Just about any bolt action 22 you find will serve you well. They've been making those things since cartridge guns got started just about so they've got it down pat.

Marlin, Savage/Stevens, Remington, Winchester, Mossberg, Browning, CZ, Ruger and a few dozen other manufacturers, probably, all make good ones. Just depends on what you want and how much you want to spend.

My personal favorite is the Ruger 77/22. I just like the classic lines. It just looks like what a bolt action rifle is supposed to look like. Mine shoot plenty well enough for me, but they are expensive so they might not be your cup of tea.

The other bolt action 22 I've got is about as far to the other end of the scale as you can get. A Stevens 46, that I have no idea how old it is. Probably worth about $50.00 or so, but is still a good shooter.

25n typically sell used for around $125 used in good condition. the one you desribe might be worth $50 without sights or magazines. It will sost you about $75 to replace these lost items.

As for other .22 bolt guns out there, there are a million of them. In a $200-$400 price range with new rifles my hands down pick would be a CZ 452. In a used rifle I wold look for a Winchester 75, Remington 513 or 541, Ruger M77/22, and look at the eastern block trainers from Romainia, the USSR and others, while these rifles my not be pretty, they are generally dead nuts accurate. Those darn commies sure know how to make a rifle barrel. :)
 
Thanks guys, I'll try making an offer on the rifle they had, but I'll keep my eye out around the shops and pawns for the models you all mentioned. I think I saw a savage MK II for around 140 somewhere, but I was hoping to find a wooden stock and it was synthetic, but if its still there and no other rifles to find used or in good condition I'll go with the new savage. Thanks again.
 
I got a Wally World Savage MkII (Non Accu trigger)-- Best $117 I ever spent. I did some trigger work (after advice off of RFC)-- I put a cheapish no name scope on it-- As much as I love my Marlin 60, the Savage is now my go to squirrel gun... I love it!

I have three 22LR bolt guns; Savage MkII BV, Remington Model 5, and an old Glenfield Model 25. All are accurate and consistent, but the Savage is my favorite. I think I got it for about $250 new. The Remington was $180 and the Glenfield was given to me 30 years ago.

A good 22LR bolt action is something you'll use forever.
 
Yeah I was looking at a Savage myself, the price was right and something about it felt like it would serve me well out on the range. It was the same one tju1973 has, from the same place. Its a bit more expensive here but its still very cheap and I have been hearing good things about Savage's MkII series.
 
I have a Remington Mdl 5 I like real well. If I was to go .22 lr bolt rifle hunting I'd look mighty hard at a Savage with an Accutrigger. If their centerfire big brothers are any indication of quality and accuracy it should be great.
 
In a Savage, I'd recommend getting one with the Accu-Trigger. It'll cost a few dollars more, but not much. And it's worth every penny.
 
anything from a pawn shop or gunshop, you should be able to get anything from marlin or savage, from 70 to 150 bucks, and have a lights out shooter. of course at gunshows, the rifles have been checked out, so if going to a pawnshop, either know how the rifle you are looking at functions, or take a experienced person with you. at gushops, you will also find a lot of other really good old stuff; h/r's, mossbergs, early remmys and winnys, and they can be a lot of money as well. and the marlin mod 25's are allways good;and lots of dudes like to really tweak, and do benchrest mods for it, it is such a rock solid action/receiver/bolt/bll to start with; if you can find an early enough model, it will also shoot short, long, and long rifle, which shooting shorts, is a killer blast. they will also shoot the Aguila Colibri, and super colibri rounds, for backyard shooting. the colibris will leave your bbl, at about 400 fps, and the supers at about 600 fps. they are so quiet, you may wanna look down the bbl, after shooting one, just to make sure it went all the way out!!!!
whatever the price tag says at a pawnshop, start off by offering them 65 % of the listed priceand go up from there but not more than 80% of the price.

if you wanna look at a ton of bolt rifles, go over here rimfirecentral.com, and look at the different
rifle named threads, and look at the pics. and for new money on a new rifle, if 400 bucks is the upper limit, You just can't beat a CZ, unless someone is going to give you an Annie, for the same 400 bucks, and that aint' happening...

I would suggest that you buy a Savage Mark II with the composite stock. You should have enough money for a nice scope within the stated budget.

Keep your eyes open. Attend a gunshow in your area. You just might find a used Remington for less and be quite happy with that for a long time. Nothing wrong with Marlin rifles.
 
A good used Cooey repeater would fit the bill also. You need to buy a later model that has scope mounts on it but they shoot well and usually sell cheap at gun shows and such.
 
I throw in a vote towards the Savage Mk II. As soon as I get the cash I'm getting one to sit in the gun cabinet as my 2nd firearm.

I learned to shoot (first time with a non-airgun) on a Savage single-shot bolt action. Experience was great but it may be tainted with a wee bit of nostalgia of being a 12 year-old boy scout in my situation. Still, I'm getting a gun close to that one.
 
CZ 452 with iron sights. Man sized .22 LR. Love mine. My first gun was a 10/22 as well. While I'll never sell it, it stays in the safe while the 452 goes out often...
 
Shop around a bit. An older used tube magazine bolt action .22 can be found typically for under $100 in the US.

None of what the others suggested is in any way bad. Lots of great options in fact. But if you're caught up by the idea of a super inexpensive plinker for occasional cheap giggles then the older forgotten Sears inhouse brand and others like it are out there for cheap. If you were in Canada I'd also suggest the Cooey option but I'm not sure they were sold in the US.... well, Remington did buy Cooey out and apparently sold some of the models down south so there may be something out there.

If you really want to buck the system stick with the iron sights or if you want look around for a nice long range peep sight. A good peep sight shooter can give a scope owner apoplexy by matching them shot for shot or at least making their life difficult.... :D
 
I have a Savage MK II FV with accu-trigger and love it very accurate have a 6 x 24 40mm scope on it, I also have their 93R17 FV in 17 HRM a little pricey to shoot but a tack driver as is the MK II. They are available for under $250.
 
If you can save $400, I'd strongly recommend a CZ 452. Its a much nicer rifle then the others mentioned, and I own, have owned or have used many of the others mentioned.
 
Winchester bought out Cooey. I have both Cooeys and Cooeys made by Winchester. The newer Winchester ones sometimes came with grooves for scopes.
 
Alright thanks alot, I'm waiting on my pals to head back to the range to make an offer on the rifle, but I'm not as worried about what they'll say now that I've gotten some good advice on the deal. If they don't want to sell or trade I'll just drag one of them to a gun or pawn to look for the rifles you've mentioned. Thanks again.
