Hello Folks,

I'd like to swap out a 6-inch barrel with an 8-inch barrel on my stainless Python. I called Colt and they said (based on the serial number, T-900xx) that it needs the new thread design (as exists on the single pin front sight), and unfortunately, they don't have any in stock. :(

What confuses me is that mine has the two pin front sight, which according to Colt is the old design. But according to the serial number, it's the new thread design. :banghead:

I can't figure this one out and would appreciate anyone providing information that would help me select the right 8-inch barrel - when it shows up for sale on the internet.

I'm also considering the idea of just buying an 8-inch stainless Python and sending the 6-inch back to Colt for a new 6-inch barrel. The existing barrel has several circular tooling marks (rings) inside the bore that run perpendicular to the barrel axis. They're about a half inch forward of the frame/barrel joint. I didn't have my strong reading glasses (3.25) with me at the time of purchase and therefore didn't notice them until later. I'm not sure, at this time, if the tooling marks impact accuracy.

Thanks for the help …. Mike

Python Barrel Threads

All Python barrels with the two pin front sight are .5634-32 threads.Colt changed to the newer one pin front sight barrels which are threaded .562-36.

That sounds like the plan right there!

Buying a used 8" barrel on the internet, that may or may not have the right threads, could be just the tip of the iceberg.

It was probably already hand-fitted to another Python, and the barrel cylinder gap on your gun probably will not be the same.

Your chances are 50/50 that the barrel shank will be long enough to be mated up with your frame & cylinder properly.

Thanks for the quick reply and info guys.

The last thing I want is more problems - so I'll have Colt swap the 6-inch barrel for a new one if it needs it.

Many thanks .....
