I have a question about the Civilian Marksmanship Program, and I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I'd like to get a M1, and I think that I have all of the eligibility requirements, but I'm not sure. Here's what I found on their website.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

U.S. Citizenship:
Got that covered.
Membership in CMP Affiliated Organization
The gun club I belong to, Fall Creek Valley Conservation Club, is on their list of affiliated organizations.
Marksmanship or other Firearms Related Activity
Under this section, the website lists "Concealed Carry License". I live in Indiana, so I don't think that what I have is technically called that, but the license says "License to Carry Handgun" on it, so I think it will work.
Be Legally Eligible to Purchase a Firearm
Nope, not a felon or mentally unstable...yet.

So, first, do you think that I meet the requirements, and second, is getting a M1 from CMP a good idea?

I heard a brief mention (on this site) that all of the Service Grade rifles were gone, although I also heard (on this website) that CMP had enough to last them for another year or so...

Anyway, if they are still available, I've heard nothing but good things, and was planning on buying one myself after I take this marksmanship class at the end of the month.

I'm sure your license to carry a pistol should work fine. The CMP is looking for reasons to qualify folks to buy rifles, not turn them down. I'd be shocked if they didn't accept it.

I'm sure you've done something at your gun club that would qualify too.

Buying from the CMP is a great idea.

CMP

sounds like you cut the mustard on approval, I've been buying all grades for years, all shoot well, while they may not be the prettiest they are genuine USA rifles. I'm only sorry I wasn't able to get some 03's before they ran out, best buy on M1 carbines, I have them all but the elusive IP, havent found one I can afford.
hey good luck with your goal.

I picked up a SG HRA Garand this past year & was extremely happy with the value received. Ended up getting 4 spam cans of HXP to go along with it (2 w/ammon on clips & 2w/ boxed).

According to their web site availability displays, you should have no problem placing orders for service grade Garands or carbines ...

If you are in an area where shooting ball ammo with some steel content is OK, you can't beat the HXP '06 ammo for bang for the buck.

Thanks for the responses.

I saw that one of the locations is in Ohio. Since I live in Indiana, I may just make the trip over there and save myself the delivery fee. Yeah, I'll pay more than that in gas, but I've always liked road trips. :D

If you do go to Camp Perry from Indiana, leave at 6 or 7am. Once you hit the state line it seems like all of Ohio has road construction. The Camp Perry store is open 8-430 Wed-Fri.

I went two weeks ago, they had a nice selection, no service grade Garands though... Heck of a lot of Nat Postal Meter Carbines.

Bruenor, Personally, I think buying an M1 from CMP is by far and away the best deal you will find on an M1. They have plenty of service grades left. Many many! Go get one!

What you save on shipping will be more than offset by the sales tax you will have to pay in Ohio. But its still a good idea, you will be able to pick out a good one! Be sure to take all the required documents with you.

The CMP is a great organization to deal with, have fun!

Buying from the CMP?

sounds like you have everything covered. give 'em a call to see if your license to carry will work, it should. And yes it is an excellent to order for them. Very wonderful people to deal with. I need to order another one, a Carbine, and ammo.

Most definitely make the trip to Camp Perry. You will get to choose your rifle. They usually have more on display than they can post on their website. They are also helpful in helping you check out the condition (but remember they are also selling). Arm yourself with as much Garand knowledge as possible. Also pick up and handle as many Garands as possible. Work the action. Watch your fingers. Bring a rag to wipe off the cosmoline. Look for the one that feels right to you. Because they are all very different. Bring some extra money if you can, because there are more Garands, 1903s, NICE .22s, ammo and other very good deals.

Also take the opportunity to check out Camp Perry. Go look at the 1000 yard rifle ranges shooting over the shores of Lake Erie. Go buy some supplies and Camp Perry shirts at the PX (open to civilians). If you are there during the national championships, check out vender's row. Take a peek into the white WW2 P.O.W. huts where the competitors sleep. Stop in Port Clinton for walleye at Jolly Rogers Seafood House.

Definitely take the trip to Camp Perry.

As has been alluded to, the semantics of the license dont matter. My WA "concealed pistol license" and OR "concealed handgun license" worked fine. There are lots of slightly different names for CCW permits, varying by state, and that is what they are looking for. The exact name of what it is in any particular state doesnt matter.

As for CMP being a good idea, I was very happy with the price, and quality of bth my M1 Garand, and M1 Carbine from them, and I ahve yet to hear of more than a small handful of complaints about CMP in thier entire history, and not ONE instancec where they did not immediately make it right to the complainers satisfaction, so no worries.
