I have a stupid question, I just got an 870 clone. I went out this past weekend and shot about 125 rounds. Everyone keeps saying to shoot with both eyes open, but this messes with me. I am right handed, but left eye dominant.

Seems that if I throw and shoot quickly (throwing by hand myself and shooting), but if I let the clay get out I have trouble with my sight. Because what I am seeing is not over the barrel of the shotgun, but slightly off to one side and at an angle.

Any thoughts or suggestions on how to over come this would be appreciated.

The proper way is to shoot to the dominant eye ,i n your case left.It is easier to train the hand than train the eye.

I wish to heck I could offer a fool proof, iron clad GUARANTEED method to solve your problem, but there are none.

Here's a couple options....

First, switch to shooting from the south side. Mike Bittman, the writer and SC champ, did exactly this 11 years ago. His name turns up with astonishing regularity in the results in the back of Sporting Clays Magazine. Downside, not everyone can do it.

Second, squint or close the off eye. Downside here is the target looks further off, faster and smaller, according to Gil and Vicki Ash,instructors par excellence. I squint or just wink.

Third, focus the very front of the clay and do not aim. With practice, SOME folks can overcome the eye/hand mismatch. I'm in this process now.

Fourth, use tape or the Magic Dot style opaque blocker. Downside, changing glasses for different light conditions means more dots or tape in exactly the same place.

HTH....

I know a fella claims he cross-trained his weak eye by practicing mounting, pointing, and dryfire whenever he watched TV. His brother claims it is true. He watched football, tracking the action on the screen with the bead on his SG and his non-dominant right eye. These 2 brothers kill more than thier share of ducks and geese.

I will head out Friday and try left hand shooting.

When closing one eye, I couldn't hit anything. Don't know if it was just me slowing down when I did it or what. Just want to make sure I am following proper procedure, much easier to learn right from the start than to correct later.

Kingcreek, I do like that idea though. That would sure put a scare in my daughter's boyfriend when he comes over. LOL

I have the same issue. I can and have shot left handed, but I just really don't like doing that, since using my right hand is natural.

I think I got a lot of practice from paintball, where nobody really uses sights. I'm no shotgun expert and don't shoot clays nearly as much as I'd like, but I'm not terrible at all. I had no problems getting a goose on the only goose hunt I went on.

I think the mid-rib bead on our hunting shotguns helps me a bit. It helps draw my right eye down the barrel.
