Today I was looking at 500s, 590A1s, 930s, etc. All of them have 4 screws in the top of the receiver, so:

1. Are these for mounting a rail?
2. If yes, then which rail(s) work(s)? Proprietary to Mossberg? Where order?

Thanks.

They are for mounting a scope base.

They all have the same Mossberg hole spacing and the same rail will fit all three shotguns. The same screws will fit also. They take 8-40 screws. I have a $7 UTG Model 500 rail on my Mossberg 930 SPX. I changed out the screws that came with the UTG rail for better ones. The rail is very good quality. You can pick one up at Cheaper Than Dirt or other places. Halvin sales also carries a M 500 rail. It will have better quality screws with it. They have a website.

I have a mossberg500a, and i can't find the screws your talking about. they should be on the top right where the shells extract right?

On the very top of your receiver. There should be 4 screws, i'ts called a "drilled and tapped receiver". From what I hear, not all mossbergs come drilled and tapped.

The drilled & tapped receiver is also for the Mossberg factory ghost ring sight set.

The earlier model shotguns take different size screws, 6-48 I believe. The rail will say for early model Mossberg 500 shotguns.

yep. I have a non-drilled and tapped reciver. that sucks. :(

No biggie, with a little time and knowledge, you can drill and tap your own receiver, a lot of people do this. Or if you don't feel you are capable of doing this modification, take it to a competent gunsmith.

The closet thing to a "competent gunsmith" anywhere near me in Tennessee is a bubba who knocked his sister up to many times and has to pay child support to his mom. :D

Not really just sounds good.

lol, well some people will argue that a pump shotgun only needs a bead sight, which I some what agree with. :)

I do like my bead sight. But i also want to try out a small red dot sight for home defense. It'll also help extend my range a little, because i suck at aiming because my eye are horrible. if i "put red thingy on bad thingy" i think I'll be okay. I'm okay at shot range and hip firing. i can actually fire the shotgun better from the hip. :D

I have a Sidearmor rail for use with a CompM2 on mine. I think I saw one other brand of rail at the time I bought it, but can't recall. Anyway, looks like there are more options now.
