I picked up my new Ruger GP-100 a couple of days ago and it shoots just fine and there are no flaws on it to speak of. I feel I made a good purchase, but one thing that I have a question about is the cylinder and frame. When the cylinder is in the locked postion the bottom of the cylinder in the front toward the barrel just barely misses the frame. The rear of the cylinder has plenty of room between the the frame. So when you look at it from the side it looks like the cylinder is offset and dips down toward the front of the gun. Now I know that the cylinder is not offset because everthing lines up the way it should and it shoots like it should. I asked the the guy at the gun store if this was normal and he said yes. But it just dosen't seem right that the cylinder is that close to the frame in the front. Is this common with the GP-100s or is this something I should have a gunsmith look at? I looked at another one at a different gun shop and the front of the cylinder on that was like mine but not as close to the frame. I asked the guy at that gun store if this was a common thing and he said yes because of how the frames are made. But it just dosen't seem right to me. Maybe because I am used to Smiths and not Rugers. Dose anyone else's GP-100 have the same thing going on with theirs or is this something I need to look into and get fixed?

The only GP that I ever owned, I traded away, I don't rcall looking like that. Call Ruger and talk with them, quit fooling around with people that will tell you anything that they hope you want to hear. If you have a real good high quailty gunsmith, you might ask him, but sales people are just that sales people. If your gun is new, i would expect Ruger will make it right. P.T.

My 161 frame and the cylinder seem to be parallel on top and bottom - any un-parallel-ness is too minute for me to see without a micrometer.

I dug out my GP100 and took a look at it. The gap between the cylinder and barrel is quite small and the gap on the back end of the cylinder is much larger. Your gun sounds okay to me. I do not get the perception that the cylinder is leans toward the barrel. On less expensive revolvers, one of the typical problems is too large a cylinder gap which allows gases, gun powder, and lead fragments to sometimes hit you in the face. I have not observed that problem with my GP.

The opening should be evenly spaced around the cylinder with the opening parallel to the cylinder across the top and across the bottom. Since it's shooting well, it's only a cosmetic issue, but it should be done right.

It sounds like they were sloppy and didn't machine the opening evenly. They left a little too much stock at the front bottom of the cylinder opening in the frame. They should be able to fix it, and I think if it were my gun I'd make them.

Call Ruger and tell them what's going on. They'll give you a shipping address. Ship them the gun. When it's been returned to you with the problem corrected, send them a letter referencing the warranty repair receipt and ask them to refund your initial shipping charges. They'll do it as long as it was repaired as a warranty issue.
