I went to the gun show today and tried to sell some spent brass and the guy offered me $ 50.00 for

1,523 casings of mixed headstamp .223 ( mostly Remington and Federal )
472 casings of mixed headstamp .45 ACP ( mostly Winchester )
175 casings of mixed headstamp .40 S&W ( mostly Winchester )
93 casings of mixed headstamp 9MM ( mostly Federal )
60 casings of mixed headstamp .357 Sig ( mostly Federal )

Did he try to rip me off or is that the going price

I did not sell it to him because I thought he was trying to rip me off

What would the going price for this be

Thanks for Help

Yeah, he did attempt to take advantage of you. Buy cheap and resell high.
You can do better by posting your brass FS on this site.
Once fired .45 ACP mixed headstamped cleaned goes for around $60.00 which includes shipping which is around $10.00 USPS flat rate box. Same headstamp could go for a bit higher The above is what I sell .45ACP for when I have to much of it. Another thing that I do is toss in another pound just in case I missed some MIL or the hated A brass during the sorting process. No I do not count each piece of brass 12.5 pounds of .45ACP=around 1,000 pieces Most folks like to buy brass in 1,000 lots.

Do the math. You can find many threads on selling brass in the buy, sell, trade reloading components.

In general, pistol straight wall cases up to 40 S & W go for 3-4 cents each depending on condition.

.45 and larger can go for 6-8 cents each, depending on condition.

.223 can sell for 8-10 cents each.

Other larger rifle calibers can get up to 13-14 cents each.

Depends on what shape, deprimed, polished, headstamp?

Bottom line: It's only worth what you and the buyer agree on.

You can check prices here:

If the brass is clean and sorted then
223 is about .07 X 1,523 = $106
800 assorted .035 avg X 800 = $28
Total of roughly $134, but that is if you are the consumer buying it.

Now lets get real here, Does the businessman sell it for what he paid for it????????? A person is in business and must make a profit, or he doesn't stay in business. In the business world you must make at least a 33% retail mark up, and that is only on items that sell within a very short time. If it takes longer to sell, then you must make more, or go out of business. If it sells for $100, you can pay no more than $66.

But in the case of brass, he doesn't know if the brass is once fired or multi fired, he is gambling on your honesty (and believe me there are lots of buys out there ready to lie about the quality when they sell it to him)/

So bottom line here, was his offer reasonable? Probably a little low, but I would wager he has contacts where he pays less that what he offered you. Selling it on your own is the way to go.

He wasn't ripping you off anymore than what a scrap metal dealer would have offered you.
I figure you have 26 pounds of brass and the going rate is $1.90 per .lb.
That works out to be $49.40.

Many dealers have gone the scrap metal route. Too much hassle with sorting, cleaning, shipping, paying fees to auction sites and PayPal then waiting for your money to arrive.

I don't think his offer was all that horrible, given that he couldn't verify that you were selling once fired brass, and you were selling mixed headstamp lots of brass.

I still think he was maybe a bit low... But, I wouldn't go so far as to say that he was trying to rip you off. Obviously that's all the brass was worth to him.

I personally have a good on-going supply of once fired .223 military brass at my disposal at this time... So, I wouldn't be willing to pay for brass unless it was already cleaned, prepared, and sorted.

But, I would be searching for matching headstamps if I were buying brass right now in any other caliber too.

To each their own.

I don't think he was offering you top dollar, but I don't think he was completely low-balling you either.
