If you have a pistol with a round in the chamber, and the hammer decocked, what if you dropped the gun or hit the hammer against something by accident? Would the hammer push the firing pin into the primer and cause the gun to fire?

Or is something keeping the hammer from reaching the firing pin when decocked?

Or is something separating the firing pin from the primer when decocked?

I'm just confused of this concept of carrying with a round in the chamber while decocked....it seems like if something hit the hammer hard enough, it would hit the firing pin which hits the primer and causes the gun to fire.

While this is a general question, in particular, I'm wondering about the CZ P-01.

most autos either have a pin block that will stop the pin unless the trigger is pulled, or inertial firing pins, where the pin is too short to reach the primer when the hammer is down.

The CZ P-01 has a firing pin block. I'm not sure of the exact mechanism on that one, but most have a lever, a plunger, or something similar that blocks a shoulder on or a notch in the firing pin from moving forward. This block is pushed out of the way by the trigger bar when you pull the trigger allowing the fire pin to move forward when the hammer hits it.

In addition to the firing pin block that the others have mentioned, when the P-01 is decocked the hammer drops to half cock, not full down, so the hammer is not in contact with the firing pin.
