I did a little horse trading last night and wound up with a few new (used but new to me) guns. One of these was a Maverick 88 12g, nothing special but its tight and vented rib really sets it off. There was about 6 round that came along with it in a stock sleeve. 4 of the rounds are Winchester PDX1 that after a little research found they contain 3 00 buck on top of a rifled slug. The only choke that I have with it is Modified, is this choke too tight for the slug or should I pick up a different choke.

I'd suggest switching to an IC or C, not JUST for safety shooting the slug, but also for better spread on the pellets. All of the newer Mavericks use Mossberg chokes, so no worries... the older ones aren't interchangable with mossy chokes, though... you can check if you know someone with a mossy choke on hand, or run the serial number by the company to find out (which will take longer).

Modified is as tight as you would want to go for slug/buckshot, with {Generally speaking here} cylinder or improved cylinder as the prefered chokes.

I say 'generally speaking' because each shotgun barrel/choke/load is a law unto itself...

F'rinstance, MY Maverick 88 with the 18-1/2" cyhlinder bore barrel is best with #4Buck, while a Shooting Budds M88 with the same barrel shoots #1Buck best.

Thanks for confirming what I thought. I have not shot a 12ga for a few years so I might have to let my 12yr grandson try it first. Yea I'm old and wimpy but still can fake it saying Naa it didn't kick that bad, while holding back a tear or two. Again thanks guys

There is NO safety issue with shooting slugs through a Mod or Full choke if thats what you have. You may likely get better patterns with Imp Cyl, or Cyl though.

Imagine the legal problems ammo manufactures would have had over the last 75 years since the Forster slug came on the market if there were.

Back in the day, there were more thin muzzle Full choke shotguns made then any other choke.

No safety issue there. I've got a Winchester that is most accurate with slugs using a mod choke.

I'd just shoot them off though, it it were me. I've got no love for gimmicky defensive rounds.

Foster slugs are designed that they can be shot though a full choke safely. Don't mean it's the most accurate, but it's safe to do so. There are many types of slugs, though, and I'm not familiar with this duplex load.

I have a 12 gauge SxS, old Spanish made Sarasqueta, that shoots like a double rifle with foster slugs. It's choked Mod/full. It does kick, it is painful, but it's accurate and safe to shoot with standard old Remington Sluggers. :D
