can anyone tell me what it is a copy of , a maverick 88 or a mossberg 500 it has a 30 inch vent rib full choke barrell,i am wanting a shorter buck/slug barrell just wanting to know what fits, thanks.

thanks anyway, supposedly a 500 mossberg i found out. out of three shotguns over the years a winchester 1200 a smith wesson 916, and now this almost new western field m550abd ,the western fields action is twice as slick as the other two, real smooth, real nice wood.

Western Field question

I have one I picked up from the pawn shop.
I did some research and found out it's a Mossberg made SG for the Monty-Ward chain stores years back when they were still around.
Mine is well built, solid and heavy duty, and has been reliable thus far. I gave $130 + tax so for that price I feel I got more than I paid for. It's in darn near great shape and has a "C-Lect" choke built onto the barrel end. Simply screw it tighter for a tighter pattern or loosen it up for a little spread on that pattern. To be honest I didn't see a world of difference in the pattern with it tight or loose. Either way about the same, six in one hand half a dozen in the other.
But after all's said and done it's a great SG for the money I spent.

Yes, I have one too. The "Mini-me dissassembly guide" stickied at the top is of my gunrack $120 WF 550.

The Western Field was a Montgomery Ward branded Mossberg 500 shotgun. The M500 parts all interchange. I like the WF550 because it has a nicer high-comb stock and a better feeling vertical ribbed fore-end than the other Mossberg only stocks.

I changed out my barrel for a 28" vent-rib mod choke tube and it's my clay birds gun now. I wound up changing the original bolt and bolt slide and put in the new model style with the spring loaded firing pin.

yeah mine has the nicest wood on any of my shotguns, and the bolt is that shiny, swirly diamond tread look, never seen it before but this 30 inch vent rib full choke barrell is getting cut to 22 or 24 inches, or i am looking for a shorter barrell.way to long..on second thought i ought a leave the factory barrell as is and buy another barrell.i havn"t shot clay"s in 10 years.

Sorry for that. Had to go out with the wife and a half a post wasn't worth leaving.

It's the same gun (as the 500) but the AB had a really nice scalloped bolt and lifter. It was a serious attempt at a hunting gun, nice blue, real walnut with grip cap etc....and some stores sold them with hunting scenes engraved into the receivers.

Check it to be sure it's a two bar receiver/bolt slide, but other than that, they're interchangeable (with the 500). The bolt and lifter will probably want to be replaced, though....they're just too pretty for a knockaround gun.

My wife says if I quote myself too many times, I'll go blind. ;) That was from a post a good while back.

Those are fine guns. Some of my favs in the Mossy line.

You can get barrels all day long on gunbroker. Mossy 500 and Mav 88 are all the same. If all you want is a straight pipe no choke like you said, pick up a 28" no rib C-Lect and slice it down. Numrich has them for $50 and they go really decent on gunbroker, too.

well i havn"t hunted any birds in 15 years so i went to the local gun store with the gun ,they had one mossy 18.5 ,cylinder bore ,bead site barrell in package for 85.00,they test fit it,fit perfect, well 40.00 and my barrell later,i"m happy.my wife can even work this shotgun it is so smooth, and i think it is walnut, real pretty swirls.stay safe.

a friend just gave me one of these for free. The sucker looked like it had been stashed away in the creek behind his house for a few years. The fore end broke into pieces when I was racking it back and forth so the oil would get inside, and I had no choice but to saw off the stock because there wasn any kind of head left on the bolt. I wish I had before pics, but after slide freed up, the receiver still dry fired. It was nasty inside, but cleaned up so well, my buddy offered me money for it last night. I still prefer my 870, but impressed with the toughness of the 550. Wheres the best place to get a stock for it? Im gonna keep it for HD backup

i"m pretty sure the place is called" havlin sales"on the internet, google it, lots of mossberg stocks and ebay has a slew of cheap 500 stocks should bolt right up.good luck.
