Hi Folks,
I am a new Taurus owner and new member of this forum. I just bought a new used blued Taurus M85 with bobbed hammer. When I shake the gun I hear a rattle. I cannot tighten the cylinder release screw any tighter.
Is this rattle normal when you shake the gun?

Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Most likely, the rattle you hear is the transfer bar. If that's the case, you simply cannot eliminate it. As long as the gun functions fine, I wouldn't worry about it. See it you can localize the sound. If you hear it around the hammer, you know.

I have several Taurus revolvers and each one of them has a rattle in the hammer area. One PD armorer I know told me my Taurus 431 was "broke inside" because of that rattle.

Dear Southpaw,

Yes. Following your lead, I did localize it to the bobbed hammer area.

If it the the xfer bar moving, is that normal?

Thanks.

Absolutely. As long as it's not falling out of the frame, you're fine. It has to be a bit loose to function properly. It's got to come up fast when the hammer is cycled to insure that it's in place when the hammer comes down on it, otherwise you get a rather disconcerting "click" instead of "bang." Taurus, Ruger, and now, I imagine. even S&W guns all do this. I can't say about S&W for sure b/c I don't have one of the newer ones (S&W went to transfer bars some years back). It's a time tested, proven design that makes the gun less likely to discharge as a result of a blow to the hammer. S&W, even before the transfer bars, had a safe design, but there was something either fit intensive or maintenance intensive about their hammer mounted firing pin (it certainly looked cool though).
