So I'm out of state Saturday at a baseball game. No S&W 642 in the front right hand pocket. I do have my Benchmade AFCK with me, and a Fox Labs pepper spray .

Normally I carry my Benchmade in my left front pocket, and the pepper spray in a coat pocket. Well, no coat Saturday.

I ended up carrying the knife where I normally do (left ftront) and the Fox Labs where I normally keep the S&W. My reasoning is I'll likely need/use pepper spray before the knife, and I'm right-handed, so that should stay on my strong side. I figured the knife should stay where it normally is.

Is that what you all would recommend? Or should the knife go strong side, since it's the most lethal, and maybe needs to be more closely protected in tight crowds?

BTW, there was a patdown at the stadium gate. Both items got through, since they were not detected. I think security was simply looking for alcohol, though.

Question for brownie0486,

I am not enamored with OC sprays as a rule for defense especially in crowds or confined spaces.

If enough people are affected by spraying a perp there could be ramifications. As well, the OC is not effective on everyone.

I would prefer my EDC to be strong side where it usually is carried daily if only carrying one knife. Reactive situations need to be dealt with in a hurry and muscle memory might kick in and become relevant.

If you carry the EDC on the left and are used to getting at it from that side I'd stay that way and pepper replacing the 5 shot on the strong side as you stated.

I would go with whatever makes you feel more comfortable.

As you aware from training with me in the past, I like to carry two knives [one on each side]. Both are accessed equally well and are available to me if needed. [ And as you are aware, they fly from the pockets ].

It's personal preference in when, how, and why you carry each chosen item that day. If I felt comfortable with my choices I would probably be well healed for most situations that may arise that day.

A good point against using pepper spray in crowded public places is look what happened at that nightclub in Chicago. Now, had we not had 9/11 and the threat of terrorist chemical attacks, that incident in Chicago might not have happened. That is, peoples' fear factor might not have been as enhanced, so to speak. Most people don't know that nerve gas has no odor and neither do weaponized anthrax spores aerosolized. But people who see one or two people overcome by a spray are going to start panicking right away thinking this is the "Big One" by al Quaida and where is that darn exit pronto even if they have to climb over everyone else to get there. So using pepper spray in a public place could have some pretty serious problems attached.

My $.02, like Brownie said I am not a big fan of OC for many situations. I am an instructor and have been sprayed by accident and on purpose dozens of times. I thinking hitting the bad guy with the can is better :). I recommend a Kubaton or Palm Stick to people. They do not draw attention and are allowed most places. You can have it in your hand when the problem starts and do not have to access it. For many people who want to defend themselves but don't want to realy hurt anyone or get blood on themselves it is an awesome tool. A strike into the face of the biggest bad guy by the smallest person will save a life. For more info look at Selfdefenseforums.com and Rearic.com

Ol' Badger:

I don't know if you would want to have some of them. The tips are broken off.

On ones that did survive, One I gave to another with the tip bent good who needed a knife, one was traded away as extremely used/abused. Two I kept and threw them in the junk drawer as they are useless as a knife now.

I have a MOD CQB LE limited; Microtech UMS auto [ the updated version of the UDT ]; CRKT m16-03z t otest over the summer months and should have another test up on the site next month but don't know which one I'll test first.

The UMS goes back to Microtech after finishing the destructive tests on that blade. They want to see how the knife failed or faired in the testing for their own reference. I will be able to buy one on a deal from the factory after if I so choose at that time.

The m16-03z tanto point was sent as I want to see differences and report them to you folks about how well the tip holds up over the other model tested on the site previously. CRKT thought that would be a good idea as well and sent one. I'm sure that will be destroyed beyond anyone wanting it as well.
