Dave my 870 was made in 1991 and has seen a few thousand rounds, what parts if any should I replace, or buy for spare? Also how many rounds thru a 870 would it take to wear out or crack the steel reciever (I'm guessing more than I would ever fire in a lifetime)?

BTW It has never had a malfunction of any kind but I use it for hunting and HD and want to keep it in tip top shape. Also thanks for all you info on 870'S.

The only parts breakage I've had were two firing pin springs, mastinson. Both occurred in my TB, which sees lots of use. I know of a couple other springs busting.

Spare parts for my last institution with 30 some 870s fit in a shoebox. There were a couple beads, mag springs and a bolt.

Anecdotal evidence suggests the receivers start cracking around 250,000 rounds.

As for getting spare parts, a used bolt and TG will cover all the bases well into the next century. More commonly, people just get another 870.

Thanks for the kind words....

Oh, cool.

Good to know it'll be a while before i need to replace the receiver on my (soon to be purchased) 870.

Dave, you DO have a wealth of knowledge about shotguns. You really should write a book, you know.

There's most of a book here in the 101s, Nema. It's a series of threads to help out beginning shotgunners. Use Advanced Search, cue 101 for key words and my name as author. Enjoy.

Hard copies will be available when I get a roundtuit. Meanwhile, the meat's there....
