I am preparing a packet for my LEO friend that will be teaching the Lesson III: Firearms and the Law portion of my CPL classes. I want to make his job as easy as possible and prepare him for some questions that he might be asked. What are some of the most popular or thought provoking questions that your students have asked? I'm new to the instructor gig, so I have only heard a limited number of questions.

Here are some examples that I have heard:

-Can I shoot someone in the back? What if they tried to kill me and are running away?

-Can I shoot someone that is stealing my car or my tools?

-If I shoot someone and then find out that they were not going to harm me? What should I do?

-Can I shoot someone that is breaking into my neighbors house?

Thanks for your help. :D

I'm in Michigan as well, in Walled Lake. Where are you?

I'm preparing a similiar packet for an attorney who is going to do one of my classes for the first time. (I like to add new people so I never have to rely on the same person in case they aren't available on a class date sometime).

Obviously, I pretty much know the answer to these, but part of the process is to have the person doing the legal research them themselves or otherwise make sure they are ready for common questions.

Here are some additional questions that are typical of what comes up in class.

How do I register a pistol I inherited?
What if it was never registered?

Can I buy a pistol from my friend/relative out of state?

How do I get a purchase permit? Do I have to go to the PD in the city where I live?

Can my spouse borrow my handgun? What about my adult children?

Can I carry a rifle or shotgun with my "CCW License". (Note that it's not a "CCW License" in Michigan, but that's how they'll ask).

What if the rifle/shotgun has been registered as a pistol because it's between 26" and 30"? Can I carry it then?

Can I carry a concealed handgun while hunting? Does the gun have to conform to hunting regs?

What if I'm afield, but not hunting?

Can I carry in other states? How do I know which ones recognize Michigan's CPL?

I have a CPL from Florida (or wherever) and I have a house there too, can I just carry on that permit until I get my Michigan permit?

Can I carry on a boat? What if we go into Canadian waters?

Do I have to disclose that I'm carrying to a private security guard?

Can I carry on a college campus if I stay out of dorms and classrooms? (Note that U of M, MSU, and WSU have the power to make their own rules with the force of law and are NOT covered by the Michigan Firearms Preemption law).

On the specific use of force questions, I try emphasis that there are not always "cut and dried" answers. It's not as simple as "If this - then you can always shoot" or "If that - then never shoot."

The students always seem to want hard answers to hypothetical questions and sometimes it comes down to, "Well, the answer to that would depend on how the prosecutor viewed the situation and possibly what the jury thought."
